I recognize that some people are deeply offended by abortion.
My question is... What is their plan to end abortion?
Make it illegal..? Puh-leeze. Marijuana is illegal, and that has done nothing to stem the flood of really good dope. The drugs that everybody recognizes as deadly are all illegal, and that hasn't stopped them.
Making something illegal in this country is no way to end it.
I've asked my question on several LTTE forums, and I get <...crickets...>
Anybody know what the plan is ..?

(52,791 posts)All women "of a certain age" remember the days before Roe vs Wade. There were suicides, back ally butchers, horrid septic deaths due to attempted self administered abortions....lye, coat hangers . .horrid, lonely sad sad deaths that didn't have to happen. Safe, legal abortions stopped that.
This is never ever added to the multitudinous discussions all over the airwaves.. Making it illegal won't stop it. It will just make it deadly.

(35,421 posts)Making abortion completely illegal means that any man can impregnate any fertile woman at any time, and that woman would then be forced to carry that child to term.

(10,409 posts)Have they thought about that? Have they thought about the consequences of thousands of babies being born to young and/or poor women who will need food assistance, medical care, jobs, day care, etc. to give this former fetus a decent life? Have they thought about how much that's going to strain the social safety net? Have they thought about the impact of more unwanted and abused children being dumped into the foster care system?
They need to do some second-order thinking about this.

It's just a wedge issue that garners a lot of votes for repuglicans. At least that's my perception.

(1,999 posts)Honestly? I'd love it if abortion would go away, but as long as they are necessary they need to be legal, safe, covered by insurance, and nobody's business but the woman and her doctor--and the baby's father if the woman wants him to have a say in it.
Retrograde
(10,128 posts)back in the early 2000s when the GOP controlled both houses, the presidency and, some would say, the courts, they could have gotten at least a bill through. But that would end a nice wedge issue and then they'd have to get something else to rile the base.
I think there are some true believers on the right who do want to see abortion abolished, but for the main part the party is run by cynics who want to keep themselves in power.

(4,407 posts)It's a main selling point for them, so ending abortion would be counterproductive. The deeply religious want to move the country back to a mythical point where everybody was Christian and got along - like I say, mythical. They don't have plans either, but vote for anyone who appears to support their ideal. Then there are the very few know actually care about babies, but they don't really matter.

(12,155 posts)It's a major wedge issue with them along with gun control. Abortion pre-raygun was an non political issue. There were pro and con on both sides of the aisle.

(9,974 posts)Much of this is, IMHO, is about 3 issues; A) Increasing the supply of adoptable white babies available through their church B) Unleashing the Mighty Wrath of Gawd upon those they consider sinners (Making a pregnancy an instrument of vengance) C) A steadfast beleif that every fetus is a perfect child, no matter the evidence to the contrary.
Contraception, STD's, women's health? - the "Anti's" see these as enabling "fornicators" to (A))"deny the gifts of the Lawd" and thwart (B)
Assasination of Dr. George Tiller, and all the "partial birth" furor? That's (C), with a side of (B)
"Crisis Pregnancy Centers", clinic blockades, mandatory ultrasounds? (A) all the way
Back alley abortions, septic abortion wards, stillbirths carried to full term? Plan (B) - this is where the hypocrisy gets thick! IIRC, legal, safe abortion actually reduces the number of abortions performed, but the reduction in death and misery thwarts (B) and makes a mockery of (C)
And a lot of the "leaders" of the "Anti" movement - particularly the men - creep me out bad. They are consumed with hate, and want nothing more than the license to hurt somebody badly- which the "movement" seems quite willing to grant. Creepy like a pedophile....

(5,105 posts)Repigs controlled all three branches of gov for quite some time several years back. Had they actually wanted to, they could have passed laws, etc., etc. But they didn't.
Why on earth would they give up one of their best fundraising schemes?
Same goes with gay rights; they're trying to fundraise off all the old poots and other idiots since prop 8 died. They want to keep scaring the 'base' (idiots) with both issues because they dare not run on their record.

There will still be people performing them. Getting an abortion from one of them will be a gamble though.

(3,575 posts)ACTUALLY stopping abortion, which as you say in the OP, can't be done.
IMO, most of them know this and will be satisfied if they just don't have to support it. So, while Hyde prevents direct funding for abortions, it does not stop indirect funding.
I of course am not talking about the few far right religious types who live in a dream world. I am talking about the majority of regular people.
