Romney’s minimum wage proposal sparks conservative backlash
Romney’s minimum wage proposal sparks conservative backlash — Steve Forbes: ‘He’s still very defensive about his own wealth’
Mitt Romney's position on the minimum wage has some on the right sounding the alarm about his candidacy--and it could expose a dangerous fault line between Romney and some of the Republican Party's most reliable backers.
Romney said last week that he supports regular increases in the minimum wage to keep pace with inflation, a position he took as a candidate for president in 2008. Six years before that, as a candidate for Massachusetts governor, Romney supported linking automatic increases in the state's minimum wage to inflation. "I haven't changed my thoughts on that," he told reporters. Indexing the minimum wage to inflation is a goal of many labor-backed groups and liberal Democrats, who say it would help millions of working people. In recent years, Republicans, backed by their allies in the business community, have opposed such efforts, arguing that raising the minimum wage would reduce employment. Some on the right have come out against the very concept of a minimum wage. Romney's comments have caused concern among conservatives inside and outside the party. "It goes to show he's still very defensive about his own wealth," Steve Forbes, the publishing magnate who made his own bids for the presidency in 1996 and 2000, told Yahoo News. "All it does is give the base another reason to be unenthusiastic about him." http://news.yahoo.com/blogs/ticket/romney-minimum-wage-proposal-sparks-conservative-backlash-steve-143038744.html

2. Credit where credit is due--at least he seems to be sticking with a position, for once.

And it's the correct one. That will probably be the last nice thing I ever say about Mittens, I expect.

8. Why Newt is being quite
|
Because if Newt were to say anything Romney would talk about all the baggage he has. Plus he would make a narcissistic comment that would help plummet his ratings. It's best that he keeps his mouth shut on this particular issue.

Yes, I can imagine the freepers are having a shit-fit over this.
God forbid anyone should suggest that wages keep up with inflation. Most freepers would be perfectly happy to bring back slavery. |

I'm not going to read through them and post names.
http://www.google.com/search?sourceid=ie7&q=democrats+ask+for+increase+of+minimum+wage&rls=com.microsoft:en-us:IE-SearchBox&ie=UTF-8&oe=UTF-8&rlz=1I7TSNA_enUS387US388 I 've heard Dems all my life asking for increases in minimum wages, almost every year for as long as I can remember. I've also heard repubs say no. |

16. You appear to be confirming my point
|
This has been an area of frustration for me. I will readily admit I am frustrated with both parties and their unwillingness to do what is right in order to maintain control. This has been an area where I have been upset with Democrats. The easy solution is to increase the minimum wage, index it to inflation and be done with it FOREVER. Problem is that I sincerely believe many people want to keep it as an open issue just so they can bring it up every few years.

17. I've been injecting in conversations lately
|
that employers need to pay enough that only one person per household need work to make a reasonable living, even if subsidized by the government. There would be enough jobs to support families then and I believe (haven't numbered it out)it would be cheaper than unemployment in the long run. When I do this it's like at the doctors office or such and I'm sure the persons I'm speaking to are repubs (now a days mostly decrying their choices of which I agree with them). Anyway I present it only as my point of view and don't mention which way I vote. I'm finding many of them excepting that as a viable solution. Maybe some day I'll hear of the local tea party yelling for something like that.

7. IMHO, Mittens senses he'll get the nomination and is positioning himself for the general election
|
Color me cynical, but I suspect that anything which happens to come from Mitten's mouth is self serving and politically motivated.

11. thank you your Majesty...

Your Highness, your grace is immesurable or something like that hahahaha. To let us the peasants make $8...come on, we need to jump up with joy...Imbeciles...how can this even be a discussion? minimum wage should be two packs of cigarettes, is that simple and anyone "granting" us the favor should be run out of town! Forget inflation, complex math and all that-minimum wage today should be about $15 per hour in Chicago and that will be minimum wage because you can't leave on that but you could survive until someone stupid marries you then you will make $15.15 per hour, yearly raise but per total you will still make $15 an hour, her wage, as you most-likely be fired for making too much money and replaced with a lower-paid tech like is the case with me. I worked for Rose Pest, company owned by congressman Dold (10th district, Illinois) and half of the team there in 2010 has being replaced with lower-paid techs

15. Huh. Does Romney have a genuine sense of nobless oblige?
|
Or is he just savvy enough to realize that a shitty little safety net can be trumpeted as an excuse for any abuses of the ruling class?
Because I don't think we could call this a principle. |
