Paul Ryan narrowly misses bomb on 3rd lap of Marathon

Well-known ultra marathoner Congressman Paul Ryan, was just past the finish line on his third lap of the Boston Marathon this afternoon. Mr. Ryan was unharmed, although it is not clear from early reports whether it was his third or fourth lap of the day.

Joining him was former Governor of Alaska Sarah Palin who was there for "this wonderful commemoration of Paul Revere running into town with his bells and guns to warn the British that the rebels were gonna come get 'em!"

Or worse. I'm as far from a board nanny as you can get, and Ryan & Palin are great satire targets.

But if you've seen the photos, or spoken with anyone who's on the scene, it's a horrific tragedy -- many people with legs and feet blown completely off, blinded, just a slaughterhouse of horrors.

Save the humor for another marathon. Peace.

They'll really appreciate this brand of "humor."

Or maybe one of the dozens of victims who lost a limb would enjoy it.

19. I didn't start this thread

but did find a little comic relief after a day of tears and anger. I have family in the area and can't help but worry.

I'm not sure why you chose to attack me out of everyone on this thread who needed a light moment. If you were personally hurt by this tragic, needless, event, I am truly sorry. But there was nothing personal or about the victims in my response or in the OP, imho. It wasn't meant to degrade, demean or belittle what has happened. Quite the contrary.

60. Didn't mean to target you specifically...

My post was intended for the OP, but in haste, I inadvertently replied to the last in line, which, at the time, happened to be you. So -- it's *not* a personal attack.

Sorry for that, and BTW, I have a great sense of humor -- but I do feel a big disconnect with those who think it's okay to make a "joke" using this event -- which has morphed into a significant tragedy -- as a springboard. I'm not alone in this viewpoint, as you can see by the numerous posters here who also failed to see the humor or its timing as appropriate.

123. I sure as hell didn't.

Paul Ryan was approximately the farthest possible thing from my mind when I heard this news on Monday afternoon.

I thought about people like my friend, new to marathon-running (and now a bit fanatical about it), who had just run in San Diego Sunday morning (I immediately posted on fb to him that I was glad he hadn't run Boston this year). I thought about my brother running the Music City Marathon next week. I thought about all of the victims, many of whom will now never run again, judging from the number of leg-amputation stories out there, all because they were just taking a pretty Monday morning to do something they enjoy. Later, I thought about the family of that eight-year-old, who did nothing more wrong than simply cheering on people who had managed to run twenty-six miles. I thought about all of the people who have that incredible instinct/training to do the exact opposite of what most of us would do: they ran toward the danger, instead of away from it.

I can very honestly say, without a moment's hesitation or doubt, that Paul Ryan, Janesville, Wisconsin, the federal budget, Democrats, Republicans, or Sarah Palin never, ever crossed my mind Monday. I had actual important things to think about at the time.

My alert stated that this inappropriate post is in very poor taste, it shows a lack of compassion for the dead and maimed, and it reflects badly on DU, and on Democrats in general.

IMO, the jury system is godawful, and has contributed greatly to the hostile atmosphere now common on DU.

67. No, it is in line with our "community standards" as defined by four DUers on the jury

and therefore reflects exactly what DU is. It's not just the four people who voted to leave it either -- look at all the high-fivers in this thread. Also hosts aren't empowered to lock it because sick, puerile attempts at humor are within the SOP for this forum. Those of us who find this appalling, well we've been outvoted.

87. Have been on DU 10+ years; in that time DU has become something quite different...

...than what it was in its early years. There's been a severe erosion of civility, along with a (repeatedly) demonstrated insensitivity to the suffering of others.

I take some comfort from the posters on this thread who are objecting to its existence, even if four of those voices do not, by chance, serve on a jury simultaneously.

Even though I only have a few posts, I've been an avid DU "lurker" for some time. It sickens me that the same people who want to prevent violence against our children can then go and wish hurt or death on someone else (jokingly or not). I've seen this happen frequently on both sides and I wonder what kind of people we are becoming when we can't appreciate the life of EVERYONE.

105. ^^^^^THIS^^^^^

is a host of Environment & Energy. The sixth host of six slots there. Is this what goes on behind the scenes in the host forum? Any host of a group can troll the SOP alerts in the big forums and post them at will? I guess if someone doesn't want to be outed, they just won't alert. I don't see how the system can work when no one can trust everyone who has that access.

Is this a betrayal of trust?
Is it fair to the many good people serving as DU hosts?
I don't think this is acceptable behavior.

I've seen it done twice before, both in meta. The first one was hidden by a jury. I doubt the second one was alerted on - the entertainment value of that one was just too high for an alert.

This one is just cheesy and par for the coarse. It makes one wonder why he became a host.

Thanks for the kind words the other day.

114. It's non-stop rank hypocrisy from that tiny clique of posters who routinely make DU suck.

If you remember, it was the two posters above who are such bosom buddies that were major players in that Meta thread started by another one of their pals calling on each and every one of my posts to be alert-stalked regarding my sig line - a sig line that STILL stands, I might note, after going up against a verified 87 singular alerts, with close to two hundred related alerts made on individual posts of mine where the alert message whined about same sig line.

Now, that's an attempt to silence and alert-stalk a DU poster, my friend - and those two posters above were hip-deep in the middle of that effort. Now they whine in ATA about attempts to call out hypocrisy. It's the height of irony.

122. Sorry about your failed alert on my reply above: your phony alert message was quite humerous, BTW.

Now you can go ahead and alert on this reply, insisting to a new jury that you didn't alert on the previous post of mine above - just like you routinely tried to pull the wool over numerous DU juries when Meta was still a going concern and you were a serial alerter in it - and roll that dice yet again for about the nth time.

But, Pro-tip: DU juries tend to not be as gullible as you have consistently pretended they must be in your serial alerts and phony - often outright false - alert messages included in those same serial alerts over the time since DU3 first rolled out. Perhaps if you ceased insulting DU'ers who serve on juries intelligence with your bogus alerts, they would cease voting to "Leave" time after time after time.

But, then, Oh, my! - if you limited yourself to sending only genuine alerts to DU juries, you would have to find a new hobby, wouldn't you? Sorry about that!

That person has been crowing for weeks about the number of alerts (allegedly) sent about his sig line, even going so far as to state the the number of alerts that were allegedly sent.

He has no clue what he is talking about. There is no way for a DU member to know an alert was sent against them unless a post is hidden or a juror shares the alert with them. In the case of this person's sig line, the actual number of alerts sent was negligible.

116. That's not true, and you know it.

Anyone who read Meta knows that I was strongly opposed to call-outs, personal attacks, and pile-ons. It's what pissed you off about me. All the things you and your buddies embraced and tried to claim that that behavior was the reason for meta, even after Skinner clearly stated that meta was no safe haven for such behavior.

The first time you took issue with me, you falsely accused me of telling you to "stfu".

Now you're claiming the opposite about me. You know I've never seen DU as a free speech zone.

Maybe you need to get more organized about who you accuse of what.

107. I once posted something against corporal punishment that turned bad

because people were posting reasons justifying hitting children, even comparing it to hitting pets and animals (which they also justified).

i was so horrified by it that i requested numerous times for moderators (it was DU2) to lock it.

i had good intentions when i posted it, but for a variety of reasons, it went wrong, some i could have foreseen some i couldn't have. but that didn't matter. when a thread goes badly or causes problems that are not constructive or are more harmful than good, it's time to delete it and that's what i do.

i make mistakes, i make them on DU. everyone does, that's not a crime or terrible failing, it's just part of being a member. not correcting it or admitting to it is the unforgivable sin.

who the heck thinks they never make a mistake on DU that needs correction? that is probably the biggest and most disruptive personal failing at DU.
