NEW YORK (Reuters) Warm sun, white beaches, and million-dollar mansions notwithstanding, Miami has captured the dubious distinction of being the most miserable city in the United States, according to a new poll.
The playground of the rich and famous is home to a crippling housing crisis, one of the highest crime rates in the country, and lengthy daily commutes for workers, all of which have propelled it to the No. 1 position in the Forbes.com list.
"Miami has sun and beautiful weather but other things make people miserable. You have this two-tier society: glitzy South Beach attracts celebrities, but the income inequality has skyrocketed in recent years," explained Forbes Senior Editor Kurt Badenhausen.
The rankings are based on factors including jobless rates, violent crime, foreclosures, income and property taxes, as well as considerations like weather, commute time and political corruption.

(41,692 posts)I'll match the Palmetto Expressway to any in the country.
I live in Orlando now and visit Miami a couple of times a year.
I still love the beach, the Grove, and the food...but can only last a day or two.

(30,947 posts)I grew up in Miami and lived there until 1989 and then moved to the Atlanta, Georgia area. I am so glad that I did. I call Miami the hellhole of the South.

(30,947 posts)Now, I live in the Atlanta area and compared with Miami, the Atlanta traffic is the worst.

(33,688 posts)a few years ago. Between himself and his wife (who has a Ph.D.) they were making well over $100K/year and could only afford a medium sized apartment. Between the horrendous traffic and rain/humidity they lasted three years before throwing in the towel and leaving Miami never to return. They HATED it with a passion.

(1,451 posts)And conservative Cubans. The housing stinks for most. The police are totally corrupt. It rains all the time. I'm not surprised.

(4,266 posts)It's a three hour trip there, another three back. Rough for me, even in a rented RV, but the University is the only place familiar with my rare condition. It's a wonderful complex, one which I actually enjoy visiting.
That said, the inequality mentioned in this article is stunningly clear to me. If you drive not even five minutes outside of the university complex, you find yourself in what is - and I wish I had a better word - a slum. It's like they built an advanced, world renowned facility and dropped it in from the sky, right into the middle of a slum. Poverty like I have never seen in my own hometown of Port Saint Lucie.

(624 posts)I am sure of it , the most miserable City in the USA has a long long winter
In my mind it's impossible to be the most miserable city without a long cold winter

(68,918 posts)If there's no snow it cannot possibly be as miserable as Detroit in January...most years. They are having a nice one this year per my Dad.

(30,947 posts)I lived in Miami since I was a child. Finally, moved to the Atlanta, GA, area. At least we have seasons here.

90° in the summer 75° in the winter really nothing to complain about

(33,570 posts)Key West is not really part of FLA. It is the Conch Nation. It is far from Miami in every way.
It's like people saying they don't like NYC and some one saying they like it in the Hamptons.
And yes, I am jealous.
surfdog
(624 posts)That the worst thing about Key West is that it's attached to Florida
It's so liberal down here , it's amazing it's attached to the mainland of Florida

(9,748 posts)Miami and Chicago are worse cities than Gary, IN? Worse than East Saint Lous, IL?
It's Forbes. Rightist bullshit. Several of the cities on this list are on there solely because of high property taxes due to Reaganite tax policies at the Federal and State level pushing everything down to the local level.

(33,570 posts)But unless you experience the long. 6 mos. summer with 100%+ humidity, you don't know how miserable it can be.
I'll take the snows in winter anytime.
