1. He is an obnoxious GOP myth

I remember Regannomics and the losses to our social programs. I had a friend who used our local detox occasionally for his problem drinking. He told me that they used to give him Gator-aid to drink, to hydrate and replace minerals, but then regannomics came into play, and it was no longer available. Eventually the rehab centers and state hospitals closed and our streets began filling with poor homeless, people who were patients there.
I would venture to say that the real declining demise of our society began with the f'in gipper....

I hope he's rotting in an appropriate place.

4. As gov of Ca, he once said that taxes should hurt. Next year someone found out that he

didn't pay any taxes. No big deal, we still re elected him for a second term.

7. Thanks for this info

We are Democrats - facts are our friends! For as bad as Reagan was, we shouldn't throw out accusations like he "supported apartheid" that are not based in fact. Leave that to Republicans, we don't stoop to their level! There is PLENTY more to criticize Reagan on.

Let's start with how damaging his policies were to low-income Americans, as he GUTTED social programs to drastically increase the defense budget.

9. Congress passed sanctions against South Africa as well as did the UN, Reagan opposed both

He vetoed legislation that was overridden by Congress. He also opposed the divestiture efforts as well.

Instead, Reagan was a proponent of something called "Constructive Engagement," which pretty much delayed the process of ending Apartheid by whole years.

Reagan was no hero when it came to Apartheid. The World was engaged in one direction to remove it, he was in another.

In spite of this process later in his administration, he was an early supported of the regime as well.

11. "Our aim cannot be to punish South Africa with economic sanctions that would injure the very people

we're trying to help".

Opposing sanctions against a country is not the same as supporting the regime in that country. Not everyone who opposed sanctions against Iraq was a supporter of Saddam.

12. Reagan's rhetoric was lip service at best…

Reagan believed that the white SA govt. was an ally against Communism on the African continent and felt that their removal and replacement with an ANC led government was problematic.

And why else were the UN sanctions imposed? Against the Apartheid regime which was running the country.

Your argument follows Reagan's own, one which delayed the removal of Apartheid from South Africa.

19. He also made commercials against medicare, something about the slippery slope to Communism

What is it with Republicans and the slippery slope? Everything's a slippery slope to them. I'd like to send them all down the slippery slope in 2014!
