The "Flag Burning Dirty Hippie" meme worked against the Vietnam era anti-war movement! It HAS to work against the Occupy movement! Get busy! Why isn't the posed photo of the dirty hippie flag burners being plastered full front page on every newspaper and cable news network we own? What do you mean, Obama changed things and it isn't as easy anymore? I want my white president back! Waaaaahhh!

(10,602 posts)That was a set up. The GOP has literally burned the flag. They have exploited it and commandeered it. If they win in November we will see a vicious fascism like nothing that you can imagine.

(137 posts)Sure, the Vietnam war was eventually ended -- by Richard Nixon, who beat Humphrey in '68 very much in part because of proto-Owser antics at the Chicago convention.
And then Nixon went on to whomp McGovern in '72, and again, the FBDH factor was a big part of that blowout.

(3,574 posts)Thanks to glorious providence, one of Nixons henchmen left a door open at the Watergate Hotel, leading to months of televised hearings describing in painful detail the criminal activities of Nixons administration, leading to his resignation and a general awareness among the public that Republicans are lying thieving bastards not to be trusted with power. We turned into a nation of pot smoking, bell bottom wearing, Boones Apple Farm drinking, Beatles listening frisbee players. Until Reagan and friends came along, corporotized all the independant media outlets to disseminate propoganda, broke the unions, wasted billions on developing piss testing and reinstituted fascism. But that's OK, we are fixing that now.

(154,021 posts)Yup, Nixon was like awesome and the best thing like evah!!! Granted, compared to modern day republicans he'd join us at the OWS camp.
By the way, here s a hint, there was a riot in Chicago, it was a POLICE RIOT. There was also a revolt over the top down decisions of the party, but I am very sure you knew this.

Maybe people are more wise to the flag-waving bullshit. And less apt to lose their shit when a troll burns a piece of cloth.

(20,277 posts)ridiculous. It's insulting the the original, real dirty hippies. Whom, by the way, are now part of the generation (boomers) that is told now to shut up and get out of the way.
edited to add -- What was accomplished by burning that flag and the other vandalism? Nothing. They just looked like mindless, pointless rioters.

You sound like your parents.

(20,277 posts)My parents were honest, hard working people. THey raised me to be respectful, honest & hard working. They raised me not to be a racist, but also to not take any crap from anyone. So, in saying that I sound like my parents, thank you. Quite a nice compliment.
There have been plenty of posts dissing boomers.
Join you? And do what exactly? Sit around in a park all day?
There are far more productive ways to make change come about.

(3,574 posts)In the one I saw, OPD kettled peaceful protesters up against barriiers and then ordered them to disperse. The only way left for the protesters to go was to knock over the barriers to escape, andd when they did so, OPD STARTED ARRESTING THEM, BEATING THE SHIT OUT OF THEM, GASSING THEM AND SHOOTING THEM WITH RUBBER BULLETS. I take into account this brutality that occured before any of the vandalism took place.

(20,277 posts)The poor sainted protestors never do anything to provoke anybody. Fuck, I can see their halos from here!
Wanting some understanding but showing none. Who said the protesters were saints? Why, you did. No need to reply dear. It has only taken me a month to see who I do not wish to share with. Bye,

(45,319 posts)and 60's. They were on the front lines now, just as they were then. Where were you? Occupy has a world wide reach, and here you are wailing at one thing a handful of protesters did on a night when more than 400 of your fellow Americans were arrested and only 12 charged with any infraction of any sort. This means most of the arrests were of innocent people, hundreds of them. And your concern is for a flag meant to represent those hundreds and the rest of us as well?
nadinbrzezinski
(154,021 posts)In fact, everybody s welcomed, including a real hippie...no serious, a young woman (well in her fifties) that never left the sixties. Her stories are amazing.

They made it stick throughout W's presidency, which was enough for them to accomplish their goals. It isn't surprising that they'd continue to employ the same successful tactic. Such spurious correlations seem to exploit a fundamental vulnerability in the human mind.

(3,574 posts)He wrote a book called "I Hate Dirty Flag Burning Hippies" or something that was popular with redneck assholes. Of course, when hippies were popular, he wrote hippie exploitation songs such as "Uneasy Rider" and "Dong Haired Country Boy". If Occupy keeps gaining in popularity, we will hear Charlie singing "I'm 99% Country and 1% Redneck Asshole", or something
