Steubenville's NAACP President Says Rape Victim Was Drunk And Willing

In shocking comments, the president of the Steubenville chapter of the NAACP places the blame for the rape case that has shocked the nation on the 16-year-old victim.

Royal Mayo, a lifelong resident of the Ohio city that gained national infamy following the rape of the girl by two Steubenville High School football players, says that attention should be focused on the role of the young woman, whom he calls the "alleged victim," saying she was drunk and wanted to go out with one of the football players. He also claims that other teens involved in the incident were let off easy, because they were "well-connected."

<snip>

In a phone interview with the International Business Times, Mayo described the 16-year-old girl as the “alleged victim” and said she might have been having consensual sex. “She said her mother brought her to the party, at 3 o'clock, with a bottle of vodka,” Mayo said. “Where did you get it, young lady? You brought it from home? Where’d you get it? You came to the party with your mother.”

Mayo added that she might have been a willing participant, apparently unfazed by the inflammatory nature of such statements. “They’re alleging she got raped; she’s acknowledging that she wanted to leave with Trent. Her friends say she pushed them away as she went and got into the car, twice telling them, ‘I know what I’m doing; I’m going with Trent,’” Mayo said.

1. Not only is that statement ignorant, it's a contradiction.

When you're drunk, you don't have the mental faculties to truly consent to sexual relations or to resist them. Intoxication reduces your judgment to where you can't think of consequences of your decisions.

43. Drunk drivers plan on driving while drunk, before

they take that 3rd or 4th drink, they know that they've made a decision to drive impaired, they made a personal choice to drive drunk. No one makes a personal choice to get raped while drunk. Drunk drivers are not victims of another person's choices, rape victims are. There is a very simple question to ask yourself, what are the chances of a man being in danger of being raped because they've had too much to drink and why are the chances so much greater for women?

19. These issues have to be examined...

...if society is to solve the problems of a violent culture. It's easy to focus on the over-blown rhetoric from both sides while ignoring the deep, institutional dysfunction that is creating these personal tragedies.

We have to ask ourselves, eventually, what are our beloved institutions teaching our children, that they show such inhumanity to each other.

Sport's "cult's"....in my experience, do not celebrate 'the individual', they celebrate each other. In various sub-cultures of fan dom, team loyalty and ideology they 'toast their own greatness' with over-blown rhetoric and inappropriate 'end-zone dances'.

Now that they seen fit to shine the light on another equally dysfunctional social institution, the family, and hopefully on the influence of the local sub-cultures. I think that focusing on the 'crazies' is a distraction to the real issues of social change.

My god, they have guys ON VIDEO talking about how dead she was.

If a person passes out drunk and somebody goes into their pants and steals their wallet it is a crime called theft.

If a person passes out drunk and somebody goes into their pants for other reasons its called a controversy.

35. What an ass...

...does he not realize there are videos of the young woman being dragged around unconscious, and of young men making remarks about how "dead" she was when the rapes took place? Does he think she agreed to be urinated on? Does he think it's okay for young men to "drop her off" unconscious in her own front yard? A person that drunk could die from alcohol poisoning, or could turn over and choke on their own vomit and die (it was reported by some that she was drugged without her knowledge, making that risk greater). These things happen. Those young men are damned lucky the charges were "only" rape.

This alleged man should be booted out of the NAACP without delay. Unless the NAACP would like to be known as an organization that condones rape and the degradation of women.

I do agree that some people who should have been charged weren't and that it is likely they weren't due to being connected. Given all the crap he buried that point under no one will discuss that issue sadly. Maybe Dewine can fix that to some extent.
