Introducing Discussionist: A new forum by the creators of DU

DUers, would you use a dedicated area for GOOD NEWS? (w/edit)

Last edited Sat Mar 23, 2013, 01:43 PM - Edit history (1)

I posed this question in the AtA forum, and Skinner said that if enough people want it, he has no problem creating a new sub-forum.

I know the resistance to creating new forums is that people fear those posts will be relegated to a shadow area and never make it to GD, but I disagree. I love having a go-to place for various specific topics, and STILL BEING ABLE TO POST (or cross post) in GD and other areas when applicable.

I don't see it as one or the other when new forums are created. It provides a way to have more dedicated discussion and attention to a certain subject, but it doesn't mean it can't still be shared in GD. In such a busy forum as GD, too many awesome posts are missed. It's the nature of having a busy community

DU's two main forums are reliably full of posts which keep us informed about the many injustices in the world and issues which require our attention, and we desperately need that!!!

In order to maintain my own sanity, I curate good news every day (as do some other DUers), but we don't want to bombard GD with posts.

Yet it occurred to me that having a sub-forum dedicated to positive, inspiring stories (again, knowing they could be cross-posted when applicable to balance things in GD) would be appreciated by members who get worn down by all the negativity. Apolitical news; overt political good news would be posted in GD/Politics.

As I said, I curate such info daily and post elsewhere, so I could post it daily here at DU in such a forum as well. And others could do the same. Maybe people could even share good news they just experienced or witnessed, not only share existing stories we stumble upon.

Perhaps I could also post more regular Wishadoo/Help a DUer updates in such a sub-forum, so DUers can see how we are DOING GOOD and how we can do even more in different ways. I definitely don't want to bombard the bigger forums with this, but I also know many of you want a more reliable way to stay informed about Wishadoo/DUer things.

Would this interest you? If so, please K&R so we can see the level of interest.

Thanks!!!

Good news is always welcome in GD. I can't see that another place on DU is necessary. In fact, I'd love to see more good news posted in GD.

3. I want more in GD, too. But we all know it's like pulling teeth...

for many awesome OPs (good news and otherwise) to be seen and gain traction in such a busy forum as GD.

It's the nature of having a big community. No one's fault.

Plus, many of us don't like to essentially spam one forum with posts we personally like. If I posted the many good news-type stories I would like to in GD every day, I would be accused of just that: spamming.

Hence my suggestion for a sub-forum.

7. There's always the question of how many people will

actually go to an additional forum on DU. Most DUers have their list of forums they visit. GD is kind of home for everyone.

I suspect your good news will get more readers if posted in GD than in a forum just for good news. Look at the view count for some of your posts. That's the key thing.

10. Indeed, it is very much like home for everyone...

And we're all very different, with different personalities.

I love GD, the main gathering place, but I often want to slink into a room to get away from the bickering and negativity (even though both are often very necessary), and gather with the others who want to escape the same thing and focus on one particular topic. In this case, good.

There may not be others who feel as I do. I just get so frustrated when wonderful, inspiring OPs go unnoticed, especially in the midst of the latest brouhaha in GD, with a frenzy of posts about the same thing. Ya know?

Anyway, we'll see. Thanks, MineralMan.

34. I would love a place to go when I need a lift

For some reason it's oddly fascinating to read about the infuriating things in the news, or to get all worked up about the angry debates that sometimes happen in GD, but I don't ever feel better about life or the world afterwards. I think it'd be great to have an only-positive place on DU, as sort of a palate cleanser... I wouldn't want to ignore bad news because it's a bummer, or pretend the world is all sunshine and lollipops because that's the way I want it to be, but the world isn't all bad, either, and it's easy to forget that sometimes.

Great idea!

4. I would rather see it in GD to counterbalance the bad news. My concern is the good news will

not be seen. Human nature, for the most part, seems to be ... to be attracted to bad news. So, mixing in some good with the bad, to me at least, sheds some light on the good news!

9. Why I support it:

Stories that may be of interest often spool off the main page of GD whereas in a group they stay more readily accessible since the traffic is less (which means one has to check it less frequently).

Since one would know the group type and that it was an aggregate of such stories it would aid in spending less time searching for such stories when needed (and one could repost some in GD). Like election area here, I see some off and on in GD but when I want to look more in depth I know I can go there and that it basically all that is posted there.

Personally, in the long run, it would be nice if we could tag our OP's with up to four descriptors and we could sort by such. They could show up in the group without actually being in a group.

Until we get such breaking out things (like on reddit) is one way to help in looking for such specific things.

12. Great idea... it is a place I would visit and hopefully find stuff to post in it!

I assume the realm of good news could range from the macro - world wise, country, newsworthy - to the micro - personal, family, things observed....

Yes, I am an optimist! (which always reminds me of when I had to take some sort of IQ test early on - 6th or 7th grade - when they start to split classes into groupings based on ability. This psych asked me what an optimist is, and what a pessimist is. I told him an eye doctor, and a foot doctor.....somehow they allowed me to stay in school!)

My first thought is that that is the one exception: political good news. That gets plenty of traction in GD and Politics 2013, as well it should, of course!

This new sub-forum would be for all other types of good news. There's no reason we can't t be cross post on a regular basis, not only with GD but other areas of DU (like the environmental sub-forums in the case of good news re: the environment).

Especially in the case of good news, we need to spread the love far and wide!

Thanks.

20. You mean people dissing positive stories that are posted?

Yeah, we'd need fairly clear forum guidelines, I suppose, to keep that to a minimum. If something is posted that seems like good news but can be seen from another perspective, one which isn't so positive, that's a good discussion, imho. Piling on good news because someone hates good news is another story (and, let's face it; online forums are full of people whose sole intention is to crap on anything positive...).

But things do tend to be beaten to death in communities like DU, so it could go off track fairly easily if basic guidelines for the sub-forum aren't established. I agree.

25. Too often the good news stuff vanishes into obscurity--it gets lost in high activity levels in GD.

I love seeing good news stuff on DU, but it seems like a lot of times it gets pushed off the front pages by all the other stuff. I can hear some people arguing that it could go into the Lounge, but even there it never seems to stay on the first page for too long without a concentrated effort to keep it kicked.

I'd like to see a place here dedicated to the good news.

44. It is definitely a delicate balance for many of us...

We want to stay informed and aware of what's going on in the world (and I tend to zero in on how to take positive action, not just complain about the injustices and such), but it's easy to get flat-out depressed as a result of doing so.

That's why I immerse myself in finding good news. Balance.

but, yes!! It would wonderful to have a place for inspiring and good news. I especially like your idea of "sharing good news we experienced or witnessed." Keeping my fingers crossed that it gets approval. Thank you.

I usually retreat to The Lounge when too much bad news in LBN or GD finally get the better of me.

It would be fantastic to have a dedicated forum for GOOD NEWS.

It saves my sanity to find and create as much good as I can. I'd lose my mind if I didn't find a way to balance the daily intake of misery all around, and maintain hope.

88. One online forum has "News that makes you smile"

In addition to their regular news section. It's nice to have a place to go as a relief from the relentless stream of bad and controversial news that is usually at the top of the headlines.

They also have a "Weird News" section for those really strange stories and a "Celebrity News" one for stuff that is not really news worthy but has to do with famous people.

I'm not advocating adding all those sections, but at least one online forum has found a place for them - and gets enough traffic in each of those sections to keep them alive.

There are times where even the Lounge get a little mean. It would be nice to have a group where one can read about the good without having to drudge through the other stuff.

Lets face it, there are days when one just need to stop and see the roses that are out there without the mass of thorns.

91. You Mean for New Posters Like Me??

Hi! I don't have enough posts to start a thread, yet I have a story as Hot as Domino's or Chick-a-fil. The rule prevents DUers from learning of it. I suggest a newbie category that flips over once a week to start fresh again, so DUers can see new posters, or ideas new posters have to share.

This is probably wrong to post it, but I feel members should see and take the opportunity to protest this farmer who is protesting Obama with giant signs from his property. PLEASE post it!!

===================

Farmer under attack for signs on semi trailers criticizing Obama

Farmer, township at odds over M-6 signs
Signs on semi trailers criticize Obama, socialism

Published : Thursday, 21 Mar 2013, 8:58 PM EDT

By Henry Erb
GAINES TOWNSHIP, Mich. (WOOD) - A cattle farmer is fighting a Gaines Township zoning ordinance to keep a couple of trailer-sized political signs on his property.

A crowd is expected in 63rd District Court Friday as Vern Verduin takes on Township officials who are trying to force him to remove his signs.

The signs, which are visible from M-6, are posted on two semi-truck trailers parked in Verduin's pasture.

One reads "Marxism/Socialism = Poverty & hunger." The other reads "Obama's 'mission accomplished.' 8% unemployment. 16 trillion debt."

In the Video you will see a new semi trailer on his property with Grassmid Transport on its side that he is using. I called their company and told the dispatcher I wouldn't rent trailers from them, as they support a farmer Vern Verduin who opposes our Commander in Chief. He wants to use his business for political means (Like Domino's, Chick-a-fil), so I figure he is fair game for shutting his business down.

93. Welcome to DU, here is the link to Welcome forum. A question for you about free speech on your own

property. It seems he is posting a political message which you do not agree with. And so you are calling for a boycott of a company that this man rents from? Is this right? Trying to clarify what you mean.

FWIW, look around, read and post some more and you will soon have the 10 posts you need to start a thread.

99. Stuff would still be posted in GD...

It's not an all-or-nothing thing.

GD moves so quickly that many really good posts -- inspiring posts -- go unnoticed. That's why a dedicated space would be valued for many.

The most popular "good news" stuff would still be posted in GD. There would just be a lot more good being shared in the GOOD NEWS group.

Yes, clear guidelines for the group would need to be established. I hope others will help with that, if we get permission, that is.

-and too often GD tends to fill with examples of destruction on one level or another. Being able to shift away to a forum with examples of progress, kindness and hope would rock.

I agree that having a good news forum would keep these threads available for longer periods of time
