It says more about the times we live in than who the president happens to be at any given time. Any president right now would be a polarizing figure.

the level of bigotry in the country. Don't know if that makes sense, but I just think Schmidt is a pretty good guy for one of "them". I just read a touching piece on his support for the LGBT community. Another area where he's not a run of the mill asshole.

And that really doesn't have much to do with his race.
Most presidents are polarizing to one degree or another. It's inherent in a two party system. There are the swing voters who are in the middle, but every president has people that love him or hate him.
