Just Plain Evil: NRA Mocks Congresswoman Whose Husband Was Shot And Killed

NATIONAL HARBOR, Maryland — An NRA panel at the Conservative Political Action Conference this past weekend mocked a congresswoman whose husband was murdered in a 1993 mass-shooting, claiming she has “no idea what talking about” when it comes to gun control laws.

Twenty years ago, McCarthy’s husband Dennis was one of the six people who died in a shooting rampage on a Long Island Rail Road commuter train. The shooter, Colin Ferguson, targeted people at random, carrying a handgun and high-capacity magazines. McCarthy’s son Kevin was also shot and severely injured in the spree. The tragedy prompted McCarthy to become an outspoken advocate for stronger gun laws and eventually win a seat in Congress three years later.

Yet McCarthy’s personal experience with the horrors of gun violence did not stop the NRA from disparaging her understanding of the issues surrounding firearms. NRA Organizer Colton Kerrigan played a video of the New York congresswoman and made fun of her for not knowing what a barrel shroud is, using the episode to dismiss her entire push for stronger gun laws. She has “no idea what writing, never shot a gun before, and yet going to tell you what you should and should not own to make everybody else safer.”

KERRIGAN: These lawmakers who write these laws have no idea what they’re talking about. They’ve never shot a firearm before, they couldn’t tell you what a barrel shroud is. They couldn’t tell you what a mount is for a bayonet. They probably couldn’t tell you what a flash suppressor is. Yet these are the people who are writing the laws saying we need to ban these certain types of firearms. The underlying theme of all of this is, at the end of the day, the lawmakers have no idea what they’re writing, never shot a gun before, and yet they’re going to tell you what you should and should not own to make everybody else safer, yet they couldn’t tell you the difference between the butt or the barrel of a gun.

1. DU Gun Enthusiasts Have Been Trashing McCarthy For Years.

They'll probably show up on this thread before too long. Why they believe that their cause will be advanced by trashing McCarthy or Feinstein---individuals who have seen the effects of gun-related violence, up close and very personal---is beyond me.

24. And they are both women. Ted Cruz was just the latest doing his "mansplaining" to her on the

U.S. Constitution. Oh, how I wish she could have just said, "Look, you dumb shit, don't lecture me on the Constitution," which is in essence what she did, only nicely. I wouldn't have been so nice...

4. Par for the course.

It's a common M.O. amongst gun enthusiasts (including those here at DU) to attack gun control supporters based on a belief that they don't understand the most trivial intracaises of specific guns.

It's like a hi-lar-ious little in-joke amongst them.

26. It's embarrassing the way they repeat themselves over and over. Like it's a tic...."that thing that

goes up" is their favorite. I swear they can't help themselves from repeating that and "you were never safer" and then quoting some bullshit "statistic that the other side has and continues to knock down again and again and again.

Zombie talking points indeed...

5. So Mr. Kerrigan,

We need to know what a barrel shroud is before we can make laws to make us safer? Seriously?

Maybe you should study up on what it means to be a human being, before you open your mouth.

one notable one involved trying to explain how modern guns were deadlier than the ones available in 1800s. Somehow this caused a massive stir among the gun lovers. Unfortunately the death of innocent victims doesn't get as much emotion.

12. Doesn't surprise me a bit: there is so much hateful venom among the ranks of the "RKBA enthusiasts"

that when they get together it just sort of spews out of their mouths, like a big huge collective shit-volcano.

You see, the "RKBA" movement is largely made up of the racists and reactionaries who left the Democratic party after Nixon's "southern strategy" (which was aimed at the entire country, not just the South) effectively lured the folks who used to support Jim Crow into the Republican Party.

But there was a problem! Jim Crow support was no longer publicly acceptable, so that crowd had to find themselves a new issue to latch onto. Some went into the anti-choice movement; some became "anti-feminists" and fought the ERA and women's rights; the vast majority, however, joined the NRA and suddenly discovered they were "RKBA enthusiasts."

It is this crowd that spews these kind of ugly things about Representative McCarthy and other Democratic politicians who have the courage and vision to stand up to the gun lobby.

25. The gun trolls will be here shortly to defend the NRA and attack the victims.

Mocking people who have suffered from gun violence is par for the course for the gun lobby. They also like to go after Dianne Feinstein, and Virginia Tech survivor Colin Goddard. Pretty soon they'll be mocking Gabby Giffords. Basically anyone who reminds them of the human toll of gun violence needs to be dehumanized.

31. I was just the target of gun nut mansplaining on another DU thread.

Gun nuts typically like to downplay the lethalness of assault rifles by arguing they are just like any other rifles and that the bullets they shoot are just little "22s." I was disputing one poster's assertion that assault rifle bullets are nothing special compared to regular bullets. I said the .223 bullets of an AR are twice as long as the 22 mm bullets used by a common revolver, and come out at much higher velocity. Did he dispute that? No, he responded by mansplaining that revolvers use "22LR" not "22mm" bullets, so because I don't have the gun lingo down, I am being "willfully ignorant" and have my "head buried."

He of course did not even address my point that the high velocity of the bullets coming out of an AR, coupled with the ability to take huge capacity magazines, make them much more dangerous than any rifle or gun that does not take high-capacity magazines.

http://www.democraticunderground.com/?com=view_post&forum=1014&pid=430175

We have plenty of anonymous little Kerrigans right here at DU. And unless they resort to profanity, the MODs just keep letting them spew their NRA propaganda. It is making DU suck and I am sick of it.

34. Well, I do not agree

Automakers and D.O.T. are the ones who have their input on cars and vehicle/licensing laws. It's their profession and they do tests and studies to decide what should or should not be a law.

I think that the NRA believes that making stricter laws will just empower criminals. It doesn't take a lot of thought to realize criminals don't care about some law on paper, they'll break it regardless. I don't agree on all of the NRA's standpoints but this is one I do.

Now reading the OP link I have to say I wouldn't say the NRA is mocking this woman. If you read the article the quote of the NRA is calling the woman out saying she doesn't know anything about firearms which is true. Going back to the car analogy, I have a family friend who was killed by a drunk driver, I completely am against drunk driving but their are people out their who don't care and will risk theirs and others lives, just like their are gun owners who will risk theirs and others lives.. doesn't mean all people who drink will do this or all gun owners will do this. In fact if that were the case I'm sure you would see crazier alcohol laws.
