The inauguration of the worlds largest solar power plant in operation, the $600 million, 100 megawatt Shams-1 located 120 kilometres southwest of Abu Dhabi will enable its parent Masdar gain a competitive edge in developing and investing in similar projects in the region, said a senior official at Shams-1.

The project has been huge. Shams 1 has 258,048 parabolic trough mirrors, 192 solar collector assembly loops with eight solar collector assemblies per loop, 768 solar collector assembly units and 27, 648 absorber pipes.

At some point they had to expand it, as the dust kept them from generating as much energy as calculated.

(12,778 posts)I would think such a thing would be possible in the American Southwest too.

(952 posts)There are several solar power plants in the Mojave Desert which supply power to the electricity grid. Solar Energy Generating Systems (SEGS) is the name given to nine solar power plants in the Mojave Desert which were built in the 1980s. These plants have a combined capacity of 354 megawatts (MW) making them the largest solar power installation in the world.[1] Nevada Solar One is a solar thermal plant with a 64 MW generating capacity, located near Boulder City, Nevada.[2] The Copper Mountain Solar Facility is a 48 MW photovoltaic power plant in Boulder City, Nevada.[3]
The Blythe Solar Power Project is a 968 MW solar thermal power station under construction in Riverside County, California. The Ivanpah Solar Power Facility is a 370 MW facility under construction which will consist of three separate solar thermal power plants. There are also plans to build other large solar plants in the Mojave Desert.[4]
Insolation (solar radiation) in the Mojave Desert is among the best available in the United States, and some significant population centers are located in the area. These plants can generally be built in a few years because solar plants are built almost entirely with modular, readily available materials.[5]

By the way, Neuhardenberg is 145 MW (photovoltaic), maybe the article means largest solar HEAT plant...

So technically we've been bested in Photovoltaic AND regular old heat. Shame.

There is another huge one they are building that I pass on the freeway but I couldn't find the article about it.

(5 posts)Shams-1 is one of the largest solar power plant, but apart from this there are many more plants that are counted to be Largest Solar Power Plants in the world with capacity of more then 100 megawatt competing with each other as countries are now turning towards renewable sources. These renewable sources are clean and far more reply able then traditional Hydro-power plants.
