7. Federal Furlough Notices Go Out As Sequestration Takes Effect

Ok, if you say so.

WASHINGTON -- Federal employees began receiving furlough notices on Friday, as the deep budget cuts known as sequestration went into effect.

More than 1 million federal employees face the possibility of unpaid time off due to the across-the-board spending cuts. While some notices are going out on Friday, the furloughs will not actually take effect until April, as the government is required to give employees 30 days' notice.

23. Two agencies send early-bird furlough notices

Go ahead, explain it.
I don't question that there will be furloughs, I question that this one guy was targeted with an early notice from the National Parks Service.
What's happening is bad enough without making crap up.

Furlough notices give employees 30 days of advance warning, and trigger employee rights to respond within the agency and to file formal appeals with the Merit Systems Protection Board.
Twenty-two days is the maximum number of unpaid days off an agency can order within a year without triggering complex layoff-type procedures that among other requirements involve a longer notice period. The Defense Department, for example, has said it would spread an expected 22 furlough days for its employees over the same number of weeks starting in mid-April.
An Office of Management and Budget spokeswoman said in an e-mail that she was not aware of any agencies other than Justice and NLRB that sent out formal notices before today.(snip)

The Justice Department and the National Labor Relations Board both issued notices ahead of “furlough Friday,” with the former notifying at least some of its employees, in U.S. Attorney’s offices, as early as Feb. 20.(snip)

The NLRB sent out its notices on Tuesday, raising the prospect of up to 22 furlough days, a spokeswoman said. She said the notice states that those savings and others should generate sufficient savings to “prevent more severe actions,” such as layoffs.

36. Or he was a "seasonal" hire and he was just told...

Or he was a "seasonal" hire and he was just told...the hiring freeze is on and no hiring for non-"mission critical" positions.

Or he was a student/intern hire and those are some of the first to go.

Or he was a contract hire and all non-"mission critical" contracts are cancelled/suspended/reduced or...

Take your pick.

There are myriad scenarios in which someone today who worked for the federal government is no longer working and getting paid.

Some are lay-offs, some are no contract renewal, some are pending furloughs and some new people don't know the difference between lay-off, furlough, sorry we can't hire you this season, and so on.

By whatever name it is, the pain trickles down.

I won't be back to play the semantic game with someone who quotes the wapo as valid reporting.

Welcome to DU.

His answer--they should start their own small businesses.

Unbelievable. All we need is more AmWay distributors in Con World . . .

Last edited Fri Mar 1, 2013, 09:13 PM - Edit history (1)

I wish someone would tell them to stay home permanently. They aren't needed anymore. I really wish there was a way to furlough them until further notice, actually until after the next election. They are useless and taxpayers might as well save the money spent on their wages and benefits.

The GOP is telling people like him to go fuck themselves. They don't care. I just don't get how they can keep bringing the hammer down on working-class people and still think they'll end up with a country worth living in.

They were drafted; that's not right, but they will meet some people who got to the front-line of the revolution ahead of them: teachers; certain types of health care workers; IT professionals; retail sales staff; wait staff . . .

29. I think you better find that guy and have him check with the NLRB or his shop steward

He has certain rights under federal law regarding furlough.

Nice work assholes. They will do anything to destroy whatever the President touches. They don't care. ThEY will be employed, they have their lobby money, they have their backroom deals, and their faux non profit think tanks.

They simply don't give a fuck about Americans, unless it's the Koch Brothers. This is payback to all the idiots that voted them back into majority in the elections. They have the lowest approval rating, but somehow they keep coming back.

The housing market, the States, the schools, the jobs, are ALL bouncing back. Fuck them x1 million. I hate them.

mentioned. Even if the mention says nothing about cuts. Some of the most prevalent DU posters that rail against any mention of entitlement reform here on DU are hailed as heroes by amen choruses on DU, while anyone with enough foresight to counter their arguments are treated as pariahs.
