Gun owner fires at Walmart shoplifter to ‘mark’ him for police

A gun owner in Florida was arrested on Wednesday after he opened fire at a suspected Walmart shoplifter because he said he felt threatened and wanted to “mark” the man’s car for police.

As unarmed 42-year-old Eddie McKee allegedly ran from an Orange City Walmart with stolen merchandise, 35-year-old Jose Martinez pulled out his gun and fired at least five bullets, according to WKMG.

****

Bullets riddled McKee’s vehicle, hitting the trunk and shattering the back window. Two other cars were also hit by gunfire.

Martinez told WKMG that he was shocked that police arrested him because he thought no one other than the shoplifter was in danger. He said he just wanted to mark the man’s car for police.

Every person mistaken for an intruder by a loved one and killed would qualify as an innocent bystander.

people who carry guns look for excuses to use them. To mark the car? You don't fire a deadly weapon to mark a car. If you think that's OK, you shouldn't have access to deadly weapons.

As Jeff says, why didn't he simply write down the license plate number like the rest of us would have done?

Why not? Because he had a gun. So for him it was only natural to "solve" the problem of the alleged thief by shooting at him.

MOST people who carry firearms are in fact MOSTLY reasonable people and will not use them in a ridiculous manner like this.

What is unreasonable is that so many of the more "reasonable" people will fight tooth and nail to prevent any common sense means to try to keep the dingbats from being able to carry them.

10. The best was the interview with the shooters wife

the shoplifter ran into the wife knocking her down, then the good shooter went to work. But the interview of the wife was worthy of an Oscar. Beneath the heavy tears, she muttered that he was going to kill her. The good shooter added that the shoplifter tried backing over him, and that is why he shot. By the way, what criminal parks his getaway car so he has to back up.

event that had exactly *nothing* to do with him.

He was not directly threatened by harm in any way.
He was not in physical danger in any way.
His person or belongings were not involved, until he decided to interject himself into the matter by using deadly force.

He's going to have a swell time explaining to the insurance company why they should pay for all the damage he caused those vehicles, too.

Remember that episode when Homer gets a gun?
I thought things like the sudden crazy mob scenes were exaggerated for comedy purposes.
I always understood the Simpsons to be social commentary so that was the frame of mind I thought in.

This past decade I have come to realize that The Simpsons weren't exaggerating AT ALL.
Simpsons hit the ACTUALITY of American behavior & disguised it as comedic social satire.
Maybe we're just living in a cartoon world now but isn't this the kind of foolishness you would expect from a gag scene in The Simpsons?
Something that Homer or some other thoughtless character would do?

Art imitates life!

But police said Martinez only was bumped by the shoplifter's getaway car because he was chasing after the car and even tried to open the door to the moving vehicle before he opened fire."

I guess he want to make sure the gun could mark it.

69. Many gun nuts seem to think shoplifting should be a death sentence

They're even more radical than Saudi Arabians who cut off the hands of thieves.

75. Well, he'll be in jail for a while.

The standard for lethal force was not *quite* met here. And the ocean is moist.

"Imminent danger of death or serious injury to yourself or another person, or to prevent a felon from fleeing" does not quite translate to "shoot at a fleeing shoplifter".

...because he thought no one other than the shoplifter was in danger. Dumb statement; he did not have the right to put anybody, including the shoplifter, IN danger in the first place! (See above).
