1. it would have been deliviously ironic

if Stewart had won the Oscar for "Mr. Smith Goes to Washington" but no such luck, it was for Philadelphia Story.

As I understand it, Mr. Smith was Capra's complaint about the FDR political machine.

5. I thought Roosevelt was a bad president?

He interned the Japanese Americans and firebombed Dresden.

At least those are the arguments I've read here in the past.

It's getting so hard to keep these things straight.

9. The poster was making an ironic comment on the fact that so many people on DU these

days can't allow the mention of any good FDR did because he also did some bad things, usually for political expediency. Of course the same people also are always slamming Obama.

The poster phrased it differently, but what he meant was, "Wait a minute! I thought you DUers said FDR was a bad president!"

He was not saying so himself, though.

10. Yeah,

"The poster was making an ironic comment on the fact that so many people on DU these days can't allow the mention of any good FDR did because he also did some bad things, usually for political expediency. Of course the same people also are always slamming Obama."

...irony.
