Guess what I learned this weekend?

I had occasion to be stuck in a car with an arrogant right winger and a dear friend who is conservative but not obnoxious about it. The right winger initiated the political discussion by saying this country would be destroyed by Obama and the Democrats and everything about this country and our way of life will disappear and we will all be just like the ignorant people in Mexico. For the sake of my friend I tried to respond mildly, as we try to respect each other's opinions and don't usually discuss politics. She, by the way, kept quiet. It should have been obvious that we did not want to continue this line of conversation, but she seemed to think our reticence gave her permission to rant even more. It became impossible to hold my tongue when she made a remark about "all the stupid white people who voted for Obama." When I asked her how she explained the prosperity of the Clinton years, she informed me that the reason the economy was so good during the Clinton administration was because he had a Republican Senate and Congress! Has anyone else ever heard that one before? My blood pressure is still up. I told her if that was what she needed to believe, go ahead. Still trying not to trash all conservatives for the sake of my dear friend. She said, "Look it up! Look it up!" Most of her replies to anything I said were in the way of shouting over me and interrupting me. Please, duers, talk me down!

And the Democrats held both the House and Senate until 1995.

You should too. I don't tolerate that anymore. It's not acceptable.

When I ask where she got a particular piece of information she usually comes back with something like, "You have your sources, I have mine." To which she knows I will respond with, "Yes, but while I tell you what my sources are, you keep your information to yourself." (She gets a lot of her "information" from her dad who is an avid Fox viewer and dittohead; she's been there when he and I have had conversations that usually end when he suddenly remembers an appointment.) She has recently joined that winger faction that treasures ignorance over learning, making patience a bit more difficult to practice.
