In attempt to stop early voting, MN Republican proposes denying the vote to all active duty military

It is no secret that Republicans have been trying desperately to prevent Democratic voters from being able to cast a ballot through Voter ID laws and other vote suppression measures. The Republicans efforts to restrict the vote in Minnesota have not been successful so far and they have grown desperate, so desperate in fact that they are willing to literally throw away the entire military vote in order to prevent a law that would make it easier for the people of this state to cast a ballot.

Republicans tried to push a Voter ID law on Minnesota last November through a Constitutional Amendment, unfortunately for Republicans most voters in this state are not as stupid as they wish we were and we rejected their amendment at the ballot box.

Now Minnesota Democrats have taken up a new voting measure, but unlike the Republicans proposal the Democrats want to expand people's opportunities to vote rather than limit them. A bill has been introduced to our state legislature that would bring early voting to the state of Minnesota.

As you can probably guess Republicans don't want to make it any easier for people to vote so they are determined to stop the early voting bill from going through. Their argument is that the state Constitution specifies the date of the election so therefore they claim it is unconstitutional to cast votes before election day. There is one problem with their argument however, people already have been casting votes before election day in Minnesota for years. While Minnesota does not have early voting it does provide absentee ballots to people who are going to be out of town or are for any other reason unable to make it the polls on election day. If it is unconstitutional to vote before election day through early voting then it would also mean that absentee ballots are unconstitutional as well, but no one would be stupid enough to try to ban absentee voting in the state would they?

Well it turns out that State Senator Warren Limmer is that stupid...

State Sen. Warren Limmer, R-Maple Grove, another sponsor of voter ID, raised doubts about the legality of absentee voting. Minnesotans can vote absentee before an election if they are disabled or sick or if they expect to be traveling during an election.

Sen. Ann Rest, DFL-New Hope, warned Limmer and other legislators against edging toward a constitutional showdown over absentee voting.

“Senator Limmer, you are disenfranchising the vote of every singe member of the military,” Rest said. “I don’t think you want to go there.”

Limmer shot back: “I am not going to sit here and be questioned about my motive and be warned not to go somewhere.”

Limmer is standing his ground, he may be disenfranchising all active duty military personnel along with many thousands of other ordinary Minnesotans, but he is telling us that he is going to go there and we better not warn him to stop.

Well Senator Limmer does not have to worry about me warning him not to go there, instead I will politely tell him to "please proceed".

1. It is the Bachman effect

her stupidity spreads among the (R)s like a virus.

Surprising that Limmer is so willing to throw away the military vote since it is generally assumed to be more Repub then Dem; or maybe he realizes that assumption may not always be true...

Either way, let him have his say, I'll even go to Menards and buy him more rope

3. Any possibility that veterans can call or visit or picket him? Let the people see who he's against.

Time for these guys who screamed 'TRAITOR' at any person who dared question the Iraq War before, during or afterwards (Re: Hagel) to tell the truth about what they think about service people. After all, they and their buddies have made so many millions off the premises for war, and spent us into the poor house, because their 'sacrifice' had to be honored. The military folks that really served, not the ones who made the millions - need to be seen and heard until this is stopped.

5. Absentee Voting

I have worked as an election judge for the last 4 major elections in Minnesota including during the absentee voting season (and just down the road from Maple Grove). I can tell you that most (90%) of the people who cast absentee ballots are senior citizens. They will not be too happy at the thought that they might have to stand in line on election day. I would say that almost every single senior citizen who comes in to vote absentee puts as their reason "illness or disability". So now Mr. Limmer has alienated the military AND senior citizens; two very reliable republican voting blocks. I dare you Senator!

6. Welcome to DU

You make a very great point

There are lots of people who vote absentee in Minnesota. Seniors, students, military, travelers, and many others. No one would be happy if they tried to take absentee voting away.

and can you imagine if a DEMOCRAT was behind such a law that would disenfranchise the military? I guess IOKIYAR, AND if such a law willalso perfect those uppity dark skinned folk and dumb college kids from voting!

I really want to see Republicans take up this cause, they have no clue how stupid this kind of thing makes them look.

12. When will they turn?

I sincerely hope that the vets, serving military, and seniors that feel their vote is threatened by a nut case teabagger who is just proposing a voter suppression bill are just as concerned with the other people who ARE presently having their votes suppressed and disenfranchised. We have to all stand together and SHOUT OUT and VOTE OUT all the jerks who are stealing our votes.

More and more rethugliCONs, CONservatives, and teabaggers pissed off and fighting with other rethugliCONs, CONservatives and teabaggers is not a bad thing for America. Let's help them eat their own.

15. I will let them keep pushing this, it will only damage them

We have Democrats in control of our State House and Senate a Democratic Governor and a Democratic Secretary of State. This guy has absolutely zero chance of doing away with absentee voting, all that pushing to end absentee voting is going to do is push more people away from the GOP.

17. Rural Townships

Our township as well as other rural townships can not afford to keep a building
open anymore so we have only absentee voting. He wants to not allow voting in
rural Minnesota?

18. The "concerns" over absentee or early voters voting twice is bullshit. Voter rolls

are clearly marked when a person has voted early or by absentee ballot.
