Cure for Common Hangover? 'Pill' Mimics Action of Human Liver

Feb. 20, 2013 In a discovery that could promise a quick fix to the common hangover, a team of researchers led by UCLA engineers has identified a method for speeding up the body's reaction to the consumption of alcohol.

In a paper published online Feb. 17 in the peer-reviewed journal Nature Nanotechnology, Yunfeng Lu, a professor of chemical and biomolecular engineering at the UCLA Henry Samueli School of Engineering and Applied Science, and his colleagues describe successfully placing two complementary enzymes in a tiny capsule to speed up the elimination of alcohol from the body. The enzyme combination within the capsule essentially processes alcohol the way the liver does.

Lu, the principal investigator, said the enzyme combination could be ingested as a pill, chemically altering alcohol in the digestive system, even as the liver does its work.

"The pill acts in a way extremely similar to the way your liver does," Lu said. "With further research, this discovery could be used as a preventative measure or antidote for alcohol intoxication."

6. whiskey comes straight up and out my nose...worst burn ever!

I was a binge drinker in high school and drank vodka like water. I think that's why I just can't handle it now that i'm pretty much sober.

7. I once got through a half-litre of Smirnoff Blue in one night, with a friend

he was violently ill; I was fine (except for waking up the next day feeling like someone punched me in the liver); that was when I started to suspect that maybe I should be careful with booze (and I have, for the most part, I'll drink maybe a few times a month if that often but not at all regularly).

9. Ah, yes. A man (or woman...?) after my own heart.

A life without vodka and bacon is not worth living.

8. As the daughter, granddaughter and sister of alcoholics, I find this frightening

The last thing they need is a way to drink more comfortably.

10. We tried your way

Prohibition didn't work. Sorry your family can't handle alcohol, but the rest of us want to retain our rights.

14. I get a bit defensive

whenever I see the "this is bad for me, it's bad for everybody" type of language.

Yes, this pill makes it easier to drink. So what? People who want "consequences" for others from doing what they prohibit for themselves are just moralists of the kind who brought about Prohibition.

16. What about my right to drive on roads without drunk drivers?

Ever seen a person killed by a drunk driver? I have.

I can see someone with a drinking problem popping these and thinking they're sober enough to drive in 30 minutes or frat boys that make downing a 5th of vodka part of their hazing rituals. They'd just say, "Dude, no worries. Just take a couple of these."

17. Ok, this is about a pill that eliminates hangovers

Not a pill that allows a person to drive drunk. That's still illegal even if this pill comes to market, and it should be.

What if I want to have too many beers at home, operating nothing more dangerous than a TV remote control? Shouldn't I be able to avail myself of something that makes it easier to go to work tomorrow?

Yes, new technology can indeed be misused. That doesn't mean that people who would use it responsibly should be deprived of it. And if it really did destroy the alcohol before it hit the brain, wouldn't that be a good thing? I was in a frat myself many years ago, just the group dynamic gets you to do a LOT of stupid things that you wouldn't do alone. This isn't going to affect that one little bit.

11. It sounds like it would remove the alcohol before intoxication happened.... so why drink??

15. Yes, it would be better to create an enzyme that would breakdown acetaldehyde

That is what causes most of the hangover.
