Introducing Discussionist: A new forum by the creators of DU

is Free Republic finally finished?

"Well, faithful readers, the Free Republic website has been up and down like a yo-yo over the past couple of weeks. I thought that maybe the hampster just died, but it seems to be more serious than that. Apparently the entire steam-powered server system needs new copper tubing!"

Hey, you want us to get an all new system with all new software and add a few more pricey techs, system programmers and database administrators to keep it all working 100% of the time 24/7/365? Well, start coughing up the big bucks. As it is, we get a couple thousand donations per quarter averaging about $30 bucks each and there’s no guarantees we can cover this quarter’s expenses much less next quarter. We’re on a pay as we go system and we have zero employees. We just ask for enough to pay the bills.

This is how little these yahoos know about their "heroes".
You'll get money from Rush Limbuagh the day you marry him, and not one minute before.

To: All
Ok not meaning to be a smart as* here but I am paid 6 figures as a web and database programmer and have 3 websites and 13 years experience. So with my pedigree stated, I fail to see why this board cost gazllions to run each year.
My three websites, 2 of which have dynamic content, shopping carts, stream video and link to most social networking sites, total web hosting cost per month is 150 bucks. The highest end dedicated, unlimited bandwidth server can be had for 1000 per month, and we are talking Facebook like data traffic there.
There is no way, probability 0 that this site cost 70k a year in technical costs to manage, not possible. Technical costs cannot cost more than a few hundred per month, if they are are the board founder is getting ripped off.
For 100 bucks an hour and maybe 200 hours of total development and testing time, some shrink wrap PHP scripts for forums, and some other cheap addons I could write an ASP app that would do it all here with minimum maintenance. Don’t mean to pull on Superman’s cape , but educate me why it cost so much.

The IP address of FreeRepublic traces back via GeoIP to Robinson-Defehr consulting in Englewood Colorado. Yes, that Robinson. So it looks like he's paying his own company for colocation services!! How's that for tacking on the extra costs - instead of billing for a T-1 to his office, he sets up a shell and then charges for managed server "colocation!" I'll bet that Robinson-Defehr consulting has only one colocation client.

32. Lots of people have called him out on it over the years. He just bans them.

The reality is that, using modern cloud hosting techniques, even high throughput sites can be hosted for only a few thousand a month. Freeperland still uses no graphics and a text based interface, so its bandwidth usage should be fairly small even with high traffic levels. I'd be shocked if an actual computer professional, with knowledge of modern web architectures (last I looked, he was still running that whole shitpile on PERL), couldn't get the annual operating costs under $25k a year...probably way WAY under.

Someone once speculated that RimJob probably had dedicated fiber run to his house, set up a back room as a datacenter, and now covers all of his home bills as "operating expenses" to keep that "datacenter" wired and operating. He certainly wouldn't be the first to try that trick.

36. Dedicated fiber and a datacenter?

One computer served by the fastest DSL line his phone company offers would do it. I joke about Commodore 64s...he probably has a relatively early Pentium II. As old as his software is, he couldn't get too new or it would break.

His best option would be to buy hosting.

46. He's obviously blowing that money on something.

I use the term "datacenter" loosely. I've heard of a few homebake datacenters put together for this very purpose. Put a tile floor in an unused bedroom, hang a window mount AC unit to keep the room temps stable-ish, and then mark down most of the homes utility expenses as "operating costs". He wouldn't be the first "small business" to work this way.

And dedicated fiber isn't nearly as expensive as it used to be. If it's available in your area, you can often get dedicated fiber for less than $3,000 a month (and in some areas, less than $1,000 a month). It's about the only other thing I can think of that would possibly cost him that kind of money.

48. Jim Robinson is a millionaire now--redistributing money from red states

JR brings in $350,000 a year in donations; he does not mention the $36,000 he gets from taxpayers for earned disability and veterans benefits.

So, $1000/DAY. And he can't pay for a good server?

I checked his bandwidth and typical charges. I estimate these at $500-600/month, so much less $10,000/year.

Jim has never released any tax forms, so nobody knows---he loathes Romney but is much the same.

And there is no record that JR has ever donated to any political candidate. Pretty poor for an "activist".

He is just into it for the money--$350,000 not bad, and his Bible---apparently the Catholic Douay version, not any Protestant versions.

But actually a lot of Repubs do it, most prominently in the modern age, Jack Abramoff (remember him?) charging the GOP a huge markup to send out mail advertisements for causes and candidates he believed in anyway.

Conservatives believe in making money, remember? And political convictions serve not purpose if you can't gouge people with them.

They should call James O'Keefe, he's a master at receiving "donations".

66. This is from 2005, but it explains the "value" they're getting.

The Free Republic Controversy

The last subject I will touch upon is a matter of human resources. If the previously enumerated resources are sometimes overlooked, the HR issue is almost always overlooked. If it sounds like whining, well, I apologize in advance, the subject affects me directly.

It takes time to manage servers, to patch systems and troubleshoot issues. Free Republic, LLC owns eight machines, I oversee those, plus three other machines that assist Free Republic in some form. My day-to-day activities include: keeping abreast of the latest public security exploits and determining if they affect operations, and occassionally patching systems of said defects, monitoring network and server health, analyzing odd-ball traffic (sometimes indicates security threat), toubleshooting performance issues, keeping up with news from the distros and software we leverage, planning upgrade paths, and exploring software that will aid in these goals.

I program. I write and maintain software that is used directly and indirectly by the site. From the very visible forum software to the invisible mechanics lurking below. From the website's moderator tools to the low-level sysadmin tools. Features, big and small and mis-. I take care of it all. Including a years-in-the-making revisioning of the software. All the while, my #1 goal is to minimize interruption of ongoing operations. (Oh! How I wish to be able to take the site down for a week and refactor the database schema!) And, while I'm not much of a website designer, I do design and write the HTML, and attempt to architect the information in the best manner possible (at least the revisioning will.)

Also, I--well, my better part, Tami--deals with contract negotiations for bandwidth, credit card processing (a web of external entities in itself), obtaining and maintaining our secure certificate, domain names, hardware purchases, etc. She's an ever-present influence in the behind-the-scenes matters, from discussions of FR direction and focus, to how she dislikes a thin dashed gray line on some new page I've designed. Her input is manifold and not to be discounted.

She and I are Robinson-DeFehr Consulting, and we're consuming $4,000 every month of the $22,000 to be raised.
