Miss. Newspaper Owner Lets Homophobic Readers Have It Over Coverage of ‘Historic’ Same-Sex Wedding

I couldn't fit the full title:

Mississippi Newspaper Owner Lets Homophobic Readers Have It After They Cancel Subscriptions Over Coverage of ‘Historic’ Same-Sex Wedding

I took the bulk of the irate phone calls from people who called the paper to complain. Most of the complaints seem to revolve around the headline, "Historic Wedding," and the fact that we chose to put the story on the front page. My answer to the "Historic Wedding" headline is pretty simple. You don't have like something for it to be historic.

The holocaust, bombing of Pearl Harbor and the Black Sox scandal are all historic. I'm in no way comparing the downtown wedding of two females to any of those events (even though some of you made it quite clear that you think gay marriage is much worse).

Cegielski goes on to note that many of those who took issue with the article expressed concern for their children or the children of others.

To those people he had this to say:

We have stories about child molesters, murders and all kinds of vicious, barbaric acts of evil committed by heinous criminals on our front page and yet we never receive a call from anyone saying 'I don't need my children reading this.' Never. Ever. However, a story about two women exchanging marriage vows and we get swamped with people worried about their children.

20. Just a reminder

There are brave ethical liberals in every part of the country. Just because the right wing assholes outnumber us in the southern states doesn't mean there aren't a lot a people fighting like hell against them.

4. Awesome! Naturally it's from a Jones County newspaper.

Jones County has a history of being more rational than the rest of Mississippi. The country did not secede from the Union during the Civil War, understanding it was not about property (slaves) it was about economics (slave and low-income labor).

8. Fun fact: Laurel is the childhood home of Lance Bass,

the N Sync singer who came out in 2006 and became the most famous gay man from Mississippi!

25. Jones County is full of ultra-right Bible-beating Baptists.

It's also one of the most Republican counties in the state. And I think it's pretty sad that Jones County is just now having its first same sex wedding. They've been happening in my county (Harrison) for decades.

28. Well, the Coast is more liberal

by virtue of the influx of snowbirds and military. But I met a lot of fine liberals in Jones County when I lived down there. I mean, it's Mississippi, ferchrssakes - no place is truly liberal by my liberal Massachusetts upbringing standards. But you can find enclaves everywhere.

5. Our priorities are incredibly fucked up if we're more concerned about a same sex couple ...

Exchanging their vows than we are about serial killers, child molesters, bank fraudsters, the Walton family, the Koch Roaches... WTF is wrong with these hate mongers???

7. MS being dragged into the New World

UPDATE: The Leader-Call reports gaining over twice as many new subscribers as subscribers lost to the controversy — with "almost all of them" coming from outside Mississippi. "We've probably had 400 phone calls and 99% of them have been supportive," Cegielski told Jim Romenesko.

Of course, can't help but wonder who it was that was reading to all those dumb sobs in the first place

The Ceigielskis are really wonderful people and I really hope they come through this bullshit without much trouble. They certainly deserve to.

"Being a needlessly hateful asshole."

Things really haven't changed, have they? The bigots are still out in force; it's merely the targets of their hatred that have changed.

21. I thought that same sex marriage was illegal in Mississippi.

The Mississippi Marriage Amendment passed in 2004 making only marriages between a man and a woman valid in the state.

So this article confuses me. Or was this a symbolic non legally binding marriage?
