Winter warning for the Great Plains/Midwest

Well, I'm starting to get a bad feeling about this storm coming in(folks in KS and NE, you're already in the thick of it, good luck). Starting on Monday, when the forecast was for a couple of inches of snow here in Mid MO, the weather service has been jacking up the snow totals on a regular basis. Twenty four hours ago, it was four inches, last night six, this morning eight. Oh, and ice on top of that.

Now I'm hearing that this is supposed to be the worst storm since the two feet we got dumped on us in 2011. Granted, as dry as its been, it wouldn't take much to make that qualification, but still, it is a worrisome thing for the National Weather Service to be saying.

So, all of you, please prepare. With ice coming down, so will the power lines(folks at the Lake and Springfield, I'm talking about you). Please, stock up, stay home if you can, and if you can't, be careful. Most of the schools are already closed, so stay home with your kids and enjoy a snow day.

One good thing about this storm, a nice, slow melting source of moisture and nitrogen, something we could all use more of.

1. We do need the moisture!

With the heads up, I hope everyone had time to prepare. I am a little worried because it has been a while since everyone drove in snow...and no one can drive on ice!
After the last ice storm that left us without power for four days(2006?), Ameren came through and trimmed the trees, so I am hoping that is not a problem.

(Southwest of ST. Louis here and hoping we get something! My grandsons who are 5 and 3 don't really know what winter is!!

2. STL Here and some 500 schools are reported closed.

I am lucky that I don't have to work today, tomorrow another thing. Wife is off on her way with extra clothes to stay at her brother's nearby her work.

This one could be nasty, I just don't think they have a handle on it. Hopefully everyone is prepared because at this point at least around here, you probably only have a few hours before it hits.

Hope all stay safe.

and be sure to get your cell phone & electronics charged now!

4. Schools are all closed around here and there's talk of Whiteman

becoming essential personnel only.

Warrensburg is projected at 8-10 inches and the ice that's going towards Truman and Lake of the Ozarks. Me - I still have to work and I expect to be struck there .

6. I agree, I don't think that they have a handle on this storm,

It always worries me when they keep upping the snow totals. I don't think we'll really know until the snow is on the ground.

Just heard that the snow is starting in Jefferson City, thundersnow possible, and every school in the area closed(excepting the University of Missouri, they won't close for anything less than fifteen inches).

Stay safe, and have fun in the snow. It is going to be the first real snow we've had in a long while.

3. The storm two years ago?

We were the epicenter for the whole state. (I'm in Warrensburg. ) They closed UCM and White man for a few days. Not fun.

We're projected to get 8-10 inches snow like KC Metro but also projected to get the ice that is en route to the Lake. In other words, life is gonna suck in Da 'Burg tonight.

18. Shoveled the driveway 3 times today

I like to take it off in layers as opposed to killing myself doing it all at once.

I would estimate that we had at least 10 inches here and probably more.

19. My car was snowed in

at work. Not fun.

Nixon declared the emergency statewide, which was absolutely necessary.

8. Already traffic jams and wrecks are closing roads

because "people are not prepared" for the storm which has been predicted for the last few days.

10. Where are you at?

I'm in Mid Mo, and so far nothing. Apparently the snow has started about thirty miles south of me, but nothing here yet.

I think part of the reason that the Weather Service is so unsure of snow totals is that the storm slowed down, and consequently is going to be dumping a larger amount of snow as it heads east.

But yeah, I imagine that the traffic is going to be a nightmare. Luckily, as a teacher, I don't have to be at work today. My wife is going to come early, around noon, and if things get really bad, we'll have a four day weekend together

Also, I think part of the problem is we haven't had a major snow in so long, people have forgotten how to drive on in, and go all crazy.

12. SW corner of Alabama, 90 miles inland from the Gulf.

Luckily we do not "have to " drive anywhere if we don't want to.

11. They actually had a guy on the radio this morning, from the local ag extension,

He was saying this is the best form of moisture we could get, minimal runoff, a nice slow soak into the ground. A pain of a way to get it, but hey, I'll take it. We are still so desperate for moisture, I told my wife last fall that I would welcome even a two foot snow. I might just get my wish.
