Former Sen. Pete Domenici of New Mexico revealed Wednesday that he fathered a child outside his marriage three decades ago with the daughter of another former senator.

Domenici, 80, a Republican who served six terms in the Senate before retiring in 2008, and the mother of the child each released statements to the Albuquerque Journal acknowledging Domenici’s fatherhood.

“I deeply regret this and am very sorry for my behavior,” Domenici said. “I hope New Mexicans will view that my accomplishments for my beloved state outweigh my personal transgression.”

The child, now grown, was identified as Adam Paul Laxalt, a lawyer in Las Vegas. His mother, Michelle Laxalt, is the daughter of Paul Laxalt, a Republican who represented Nevada in the Senate for 12 years before leaving in 1987.

Domenici (now 80) publically admits to the affair 30 years later because he believes someone else was about to disclose the matter.

Why would such a hypocrite tell the truth otherwise?

On a side note, it seems rather sad that Ms. Laxalt is referring to her child as "one night's mistake".

I am not sure which one, but the ages and time frame seem plausible that this Adam's mom was my acquaintance's first wife (the second wife worked for me for a few years).

Per Wikipedia: "....five daughters (Gail, Sheila, Michelle, Kevin and Kathleen)...."

There is only one name on that list that rings a bell. Michelle.

Like I said, OH MY!! I wonder if Randy even knows about his first wife's little secret.

ETA: Can't confirm my suspicions via ancestry.com - might not be her. I should ask my former assistant which daughter it was.

ETA: I sure do know Nevada. My favorite uncle, the state brand inspector profiled by John McPhee in Irons in the Fire, was on a first name basis with Laxalt.

One report suggests that this would have destroyed both Senators and Reagan if it was known. How did they hide this so well?? Pre-internet days I guess
