1. This is a good one--might stick

Short, simple, and easily understood. Even the low information voter will get this one.

3. Everybody on DU -- me included -- wants to cut the Defense Department.

Now that we can actually do it everyone is in a panic. What did people think -- that the DoD could be cut without any layoffs??? Of course there will be layoffs.

4. There is a huge difference between cutting civilian workforce and huge war contracts

I am in favor of cutting projects that advance warfare.. We don't need any more aircraft carriers, or fighter jets or bombers or tanks or any of that type thing, but we do need people to keep the whole thing operating...There are as many civilians in the Defense Dept as there are military...

7. There will be layoffs no matter where DOD is cut.

People build aircraft carriers and fighters and everything else. Id DOD is cut down we don't need as many people "to keep the whole thing operating".

9. The people that build aircraft carriers are not government employees and there is other work

available. They can work on roads and bridges and buildings and a great multitude of things that they are qualified for.. government workers not so much...

5. that's only half of it

there's an equal amount of cuts to non-defense spending.

And I'm not sure I'm in favor of the defense cuts, because of the impact on the economy.

8. There will always be an impact on the economy.

We will never cut DOD if we are afraid of that. The amount of the economy that is defense is very unhealthy both in the short run and the long run.

6. If it's so terrible, why did the WH agree to it?
