McCain Jeered At Town Hall After Opposing Mass Deportation

Sen. John McCain (R-AZ) got an earful from his constituents in his home state while defending his bipartisan immigration plan at a town hall.

According to the Associated Press, an "angry crowd" reacted negatively as McCain described his proposal to grant a path to citizenship for many of the country's estimated 11 million undocumented immigrants. From their writeup:

“There are 11 million people living here illegally,” he said. “We are not going to get enough buses to deport them.”

Some audience members shouted out their disapproval.

One man yelled that only guns would discourage illegal immigration. Another man complained that illegal immigrants should never be able to become citizens or vote. A third man said illegal immigrants were illiterate invaders who wanted free government benefits.

McCain urged compassion. “We are a Judeo-Christian nation,” he said. McCain’s other town hall meeting took place in Green Valley, south of Tucson.

1. It's not my job to defend John McCain

Somebody else can do that.

He cast his lot with these people and solicited their support in 2008 and 2010, so now he has made his bed.

ready to hate the black man like they'd been promised but were disappointed with a koombayah rally. You reap what you so, Republicans. You keep piling on the hatred and racism and you build this kind of constituency.

Is it OK to make "old" jokes about McCain? Because he's, you know, OLD.

8. "11 million." Always "11 million." It's been more than 25 years since Reagan gave a one-time

amnesty. Yet, year after year the number is "11 million." Why is that?

14. The Right Wing Playbook on Immigration Reform: Strategy 6: Stop Reform by Shouting 'Amnesty'

Opponents of any legislation that would provide an earned path to citizenship grabbed onto the word "amnesty" and plastered it even on legislation that required fines and significant other requirements for law-abiding immigrants to earn a path to citizenship. Decrying "amnesty" became a way to oppose any reform short of mass deportation without saying so directly, and we should expect "no amnesty" to be a rallying cry of those who oppose any responsible approach to reform. Indeed, Pat Buchanan has written, "'Comprehensive' is the code word for amnesty." He has insisted that "America is now risking national suicide…if a path to citizenship becomes law, nothing will stop the next invasion."

In early 2007, some Republicans waged a campaign to try to keep then-Sen. Mel Martinez of Florida from becoming chairman of the GOP based on his support for comprehensive reform. The anti-Martinez organizing led RNC member Paul Senft to complain, "With some people, the issue of amnesty is a litmus test and anything short of a concentration camp is amnesty."

In 2007, as the 2008 presidential primary campaigns were getting under way, Politico said, "Political pandering was at a peak during a recent Republican presidential forum in New Hamsphire. Most of the 10 GOP White House hopefuls blasted the Senate bill as 'amnesty,' even though it calls for a steep path to legalization for most of the 21 million illegal immigrants."

It reminds me of 2008 when that batshit crazy lady decided to chime in at his town hall. McCain essentially said Obama is not an Arab, he's a good man.

As if there's something inherently wrong with being Arab.

McCain is a bigot.

19. The "Judeo-Christians" at the meeting probably want to feed the immigrants to the lions

Next, they'll propose a religious test where one must be "Judeo-Christian" in order to immigrate to the US, with the stipulation that Hispanic Catholics are not Christians.

These are right wing morons who believe that anyone who teaches universal love is a wimp.

When I see these people I thank God that the US is not a Judeo-Christian nation.

If the Bible didn't say that Israel would win in the final battle between good and evil we wouldn't give a damn about them Jews either. In fact they would be #1 on the hate list since they killed Jesus. The Bible can be damned inconvenient sometimes.

29. It's a Ten Commandments reference

8 “Remember the Sabbath day by keeping it holy. 9 Six days you shall labor and do all your work, 10 but the seventh day is a sabbath to the Lord your God. On it you shall not do any work, neither you, nor your son or daughter, nor your male or female servant, nor your animals, nor any foreigner residing in your towns.

----

It suggests by implication that a "foreigner residing in your town" is entitled to at least some rights.

30. I don't see how that connects to the phrase

"We're a Judeo~Christian Nation". He is talking about the United States of America. Not some biblical land somewhere. And, since when did Republican Tea partiers ever rate a foreigner any Rights? They would sooner ship them back to where they came. They obviously have never understood the words in-scripted on the Statue of Liberty. (Of course, She's not a Christian symbol.. but she's sacred to the ideals of this nation.)

33. Because he wasn't talking to you

It was meant in the same vein as Gov. Perry's "have a heart" supplication to the debate audience when he was talking about treatment of illegal aliens.

Sometimes one can attempt use appeals to people's prejudices in a constructive way.

No, the US has no official religion or religious philosophy. We all understand that.

McCain's audience here certainly doesn't agree with that, and would indeed assert that the US is a "Judeo Christian" country. These types of Bible bangers are quite familiar not only to the "stranger within thy gates" reference in the Ten Commandments, but with Old Testament laws in general on the subject of safe conduct of peaceful strangers, the right of sanctuary, etc.

I suppose one can just say to such an audience "Hey, you are full of shit" and end the conversation, but reminding them that there are themes within their own professed religious beliefs which conflict with their behavior is not a bad thing.

Is it all the Northern migrants who are so xenophobic and racist? I lived in Texas, and while there certainly is prejudice against Latinos, it's not to this degree.

They're a function of billionaire crankpots buying up all the media outlets to promote their failed ideology with their 'fair and balanced' networks - plural. They ran off anyone that was centrist and gave the viewers the illusion that the Birchers and the Tea Party were mainstream. Everytime one of their inoculated against reason and fact followers acts out on their hateful ideas, they call 'em nuts. Uh, huh, they own this stuff. I am old enough to remember when we had a liberal media. The world was a better place then, I think, mentally.

How is the GOP ever going to convince immigrants that they are the party that is the most recent welcoming committee, with constituents like the one quoted in the article?

They may as well look for other voting blocks starting today.

31. The RNC actually thinks that its bigoted, elderly White base is going to change, just because

they suddenly see that without the Hispanic vote, they are doomed as a party.

Their base will transition, all right...from the land of the living into the graveyard, and not be replaced by anyone at the voting booth.

If they remain static for just ten years regarding attracting a new, wider base of voters, the Republican Party is in permanent minority status nationwide.

They are almost in full panic mode, right now.
