2. I was looking for one, thanks.

Of note, if you are in Kansas City, and can give blood, think of it. They will need quite a bit of it.

Burn patients go through a lot of it.

3. Holy fuck. It's on the Plaza. Car hit a gas main. Brother lives nearby.

At least five people were seriously injured when a car struck a gas main Tuesday evening in an upscale business and shopping district of Kansas City, Mo., authorities told NBC News.

Kansas City police said the explosion occurred about 6 p.m. (7 p.m. ET) outside JJ's Restaurant in Country Club Plaza downtown.
Enormous flames tore into the night sky outside the restaurant, which was at the center of the fire and was destroyed, NBC station KSHB of Kansas City reported.
Five people with serious injuries were being transported to Saint Luke's Hospital, the hospital told NBC News. Other people were reported to be on their way to other hospitals, which said they had no details yet.
Jason Fulp, a spokesman for Missouri Gas Energy, told NBC News that he had no information on the blast. "We're trying to get our arms around it."
Witnesses told KSHB that they smelled natural gas in the area of the restaurant at least an hour before the explosion.
This is a breaking story. Please check back for developments.

17. KC is a big city - phones don't go down when it rains, like they do in California!

KCMO is bigger than San Jose with much better infrastructure.

21. Well, have you lived there? I did, for most of my life!

I also worked for Bell there and here in California; I'm very familiar with the differences in the infrastructure of the phone systems in both places, which few people are. Californians are used to the phones going out when it rains due to neglected conduit by PacBell; SWB did things differently in their region.

If you wish to take offense that I know something you don't, well, your choice; but that wasn't my intent.

50. I worked for 9-1-1 for a few years

and our phone lines always work very well. SWB did its job in this area , lol.

I do remember attending a conference and visiting with a woman who had recently moved to the area (think it was Kansas) for a manager job. She was from SCal and was impressed with the phone lines here. She said they had problems "back home" with moisture.

55. At first I thought you meant MO as in Missouri ...

A lot of East and West Coasters (not all, of course) think we have cattle roaming unpaved streets in Kansas City. A lot of people here (I live in Silicon Valley now) are surprised when I tell them about my home town: how big it is; about the Nelson having the best collection of Chinese art outside China; about my high school, in one of the best neighborhoods, having armed security guards in the early 80s; and why 'high crime' areas like EPA seem pretty sedate to me.

There are approximately 8 billion better places to get barbecue than Bryant's

Jake Edward's is also pretty damn good.

59. I never had anything there that wasn't congealed fat covered in syrup

Meat fat has always been a huge gross-out for me since I was an uncouth brat and long before it was cool Plus their sauce is just boring and too sweet. Edward's, on the other hand, has an excellent sauce with cloves and they cook their meat. And sweet potato fries (long before anyone else did).

At one...

That said, the car might have hit a distribution line

It might look like this.

On edit, media reports have backed away from vehice, and confirmed the gas leak.

My niece was at her doctors office right next door and left about 5 minutes before the blast. She says her car still smells like gas.

My son just told me they had a $40,000 bottle of wine.

I was there not long ago for a fundraiser for Claire McCaskill. The owner is a longtime Democrat and JJ's has special events for candidates during campaign season.

53. No I have not.

I've lived here all my life and I'm sick of this shit. There are way too many stupid hateful people in both KS and MO. I've lived on both sides of the state line and there's really no difference between the 2 states. In MO, you can get a 2 year tag on your car. In KS, you can add the sales tax to your car loan. That about sums up the differences.

the other not yet. The son I talked to heard it was the Majestic where they both play several times a week. So.....he must have heard or been told incorrectly. I certainly hope so since the Majestic is likely where the oldest was tonight. He is due to come home tomorrow for a few days to celebrate his 29th birthday. Crap, I am in a panic.

they think only a few workers may have still be inside but all of the patrons and wait staff and everyone was most likely out. You could always try the hospitals if you're that worried - some are at KU Med Center, or St. Lukes Plaza or even a few went to Truman Medical Center. Hope it all works out and everyone is safe.

from what I can see it is at the Plaza and my other son must have gotten incorrect information. The Majestic has one of my sons there at least 3 out of the 6 days they have music and often more. I feel a little more relaxed since I think he heard wrong and it is the Plaza.

My Mother in Law lives a block away. It is a little too close to home but not close enough for me to know anything solid!
