Gay Man Takes Down Antigay Preacher on Subway

Eventually he jumps from his seat and declares, "I'm a man, and I'm a good man, and I'm a gay man, and Jesus loves me." His comment draws applause from other subway riders.

1. This made me weep

for joy. Someone bravely standing up for what is right and true and bystanders showing their support.

My hat's off to this man for his compassion, strength and courage.

needs to go back and read about Jesus, because he is incorrect and embarrassing his faith with stupid words.

9. I love his bravery. I love the reaction from everybody else even better.

He's right -- but then society, around him, affirms his righteousness. We can't always see the arc of justice bending, but it does bend.

10. Glad he was there to speak

Is it just me, or is this a little too dramatic for a subway ride? I mean, Jesus Christ, some nitwit wants to preach about the evils of homosexuality on the subway train? And, somehow, no one has beaten him senseless yet?

You know where the real tolerance here lies? In the fact that this gay man doesn't beat the shit out of that idiot.

That's what I would've told that "preacher".

I am Straight, but not narrow.

13. You never know what kinds of nutjobs you will encounter on the subway

Fortunately, almost none of them are violent.

The preachers are the worst. When one starts up , I make a big show of taking out my headphones and plugging them into my phone and listening to music.

I object to anyone approaching me on the subway for any reason because you are essentially a captive there.

17. Jesus doesn't love homosexuals

If Jesus ever actually existed he's dead now. He doesn't love anyone.

This preacher is an ass, but just because some other people are able to reconcile their silly superstitions with modern values it doesn't make those silly superstitions any more valuable to our society and our progress as humans.

20. Yes. I'm glad someone stood up to this moron preacher, but

it's too bad so many people still buy into the mythology that a 2,000-year-old magical desert zombie is watching over everyone. It's ridiculous.

It is a much more powerful and effective response to speak back in this hater's own language.

This is a fantastic video. Thanks for sharing William.

18. I am a gay man...

and of the NY area. Props to the gay man that stood up....but the fact of the matter is he might as well be talking to a brick wall. That would be the case with most religious nuts, but in this case, the "preacher" strikes me as what my city cop relative would call an EDP or "emotionally disturbed person" (its the PC way for cops to identify a mentally unstable or downright crazy person incapable of any reason).

In a situation like this, unless he is physically assaulting someone, or directly verbally assaulting someone (yeah yeah i know you can consider his rantings as verbal assault, but i mean more like singling out an individual and berating and harassing them and only them) its best to ignore him, at least until you happen upon a transit cop (lucky if you can find one). The flash of a badge is usually enough for them to clam up or get off the train, as they are causing a disturbance.

This "preacher" is never going to "stop and suddenly read up on jesus" or "look in a mirror and realize that he is a false prophet," he's mentally unbalanced, plain and simple, at least thats my opinion. Again, this is just my take, that's all. I equate that "preacher" not with someone expressing a misguided viewpoint that needs correcting, or even an abhorrent viewpoint that requires aggressive, vocal opposition. I equate him with a rabid barking dog that is causing a disturbance and needs to be handled by the proper authorities for causing a public disturbance. You cannot reason and wax theological with Cujo....you need a big net and a dog catcher.

24. I beg to differ

He very well may be beyond help, but I think its important that the silent majority be witness to this. You don't know who else is sitting there and being affected. From perhaps another gay person who would get a tremendous lift from this, to a person who is himself/herself someone who calls themselves a Christian and debates moral issues surrounding homosexuality and is on the fence about it, or even the person who is also a bigot who is witness to this brave man fighting back, as this may make him think twice about verbally assaulting a gay person himself.

26. Agree very much

It takes a rare sort of courage to stand up to someone like that, in such a place. Whether the preacher was insane or not is quite beside the point. I think of people who are too afraid to come out of the closet, and imagine this could inspire them, particularly those with a religious upbringing.

Years ago, when I was a practicing Catholic, I slowly came to realize that my religion was filled with too much ignorance, too much hate and fear for me. Yet one thing that remains is my admiration for the Jesus of the bible. Somehow, I suspect that if Jesus were alive today, a lot of his friends would be LGBT.

27. that's cool

i respect your opinion. As for me tho, i guess i'm just jaded, having rid the subway umpteen times, you grow a thick skin over these sort of things. Again, feel free to disagree, but as for me, my take is the guy is a kook, plain and simple. There's no moral or societal introspective dialogue to extrapolate from this scene for the advancement of human rights, anymore than trying to stand up to a tinfoil head ranting about reptilian people and end times on a subway platform. Again, that's just my take. No biggie.

31. I see your point

And respect that too. Its true that even if that person did not stand up to the quack, he would be digging his own grave as every other sane person would dismiss what he said and not take it seriously anyways.

I still contend though that it may have done a tiny tiny bit of good for even one person sitting there. And that's enough. (and that's not even taking into account that its now on YouTube and reaching an even bigger audience) But yeah no biggie

28. I respect your opinion but

I'm someone that does not live in a area like you do and this type of behavior where I live can have a different end result.

But then again all homophobes & the religious right aren't balanced to begin with.

30. hi, you make a good point that i overlooked

i was looking at the situation strictly from the setting it took place in. You're right, it can have different effects in different settings, in your case FL. I was strictly responding in context of the setting of the subway, traversed by thousands of strap hangers, a veritable melting pot, or crazy gumbo if you will of varying opinions, chattering of voices, blasting of music, blaring saxophones, break dancers....on a crowded train, their feet inches from smacking an irked passenger in the face, panhandlers, public defecation, and more than a fair share of downright kooks spewing kookoo ideas and outright rants worthy of a stay at Bellevue Hospital (known historically in NYC for its mental facilities).

Talking to a crank "preacher" in the busiest subway in north america is a wasted effort IMO, But in a rural or conservative setting for example, it can have a different result. You are correct.

25. These people are used to getting away with preaching their crap with no challenges.....

I have myself just ignored people on a subway that are spewing all kinds of crap from anti-gay to end-times, etc.

I am just glad to have someone actually stand up and call them out for what they are - false prophets that are full or hate and are misleading people.
