Anonymous dump US State Dept database on the web

Anonymous dump US State Dept database on the web

Anonymous claims to have hacked the United States' State Department website and captured a database, which has now been published on the Internet.

The data dump by the hacktivists contains the names and email addresses of State Department consular and careers staffers and in some cases, their phone numbers and date of birth.

Usernames are also found in the database dump. Searching state.gov and other sites shows that several email addresses and other data match State Department staffers in the United States and legations around the world.

This includes a senior officer whose name also features in one of the leaked US State department cables published by Wikileaks.

The hack doesn't appear to have been very hard to accomplish, as the hacktivists said "F.Y.I all of this data is viewable using a few terminal commands, it's just sad that ANY part of the database basically can be publicly viewed by anyone. Information is free, as we always say."

1. Hate to say it, but I'm not clear that this is the best U.S. agency for Anon to punish.

I.e., the State Dept. seems to me to be less evil than others. They're mostly just servants.

6. Agree with the others...

Still, there could be secrets in their database. And I think that we'll know soon enough if Anonymous is behind this or not....*They are here. They are legion. Expect them*.

7. 1) Employers should make sure to lock up their employees private information securely.

2) "Anonymous" seems be just a label that anybody can use on any given day they plan to do some illegal shit. I just assume that "Anonymous" is mostly the FBI.

3) Things like this probably going to be used as an excuse to allow the government even more authority to read all your emails. Which they are already doing anyway, but hey they could always use an extra justification to legalize the illegal stuff they are already doing.

8. Tsk. Tsk. Imagine letting people in a democracy know what their public servants do.

I guess Anonymous shares that archaic notion about an "informed electorate".

9. I think they are practicing.

Trying some practice runs before they go for something bigger. Giving the Feds fits while they do it.
