Webcam catches women harassing seals on CA beach

SAN DIEGO -- A webcam set up to monitor a San Diego seal colony around the clock has captured two women harassing the animals.

KFMB-TV reports (http://bit.ly/WP0Jnn) the "seal-cam" caught the women kicking the seals, pulling their flippers and flashing lights at them at Children's Pool in La Jolla.

I saw these seals a few months ago on a trip to La Jolla. There are signs everywhere telling people not to mess with the seals! I'm surprised they weren't bitten.

1. And not a word about all the men who harass seals. Typical.

9. Funny!

Unless you were serious, in which case it's hysterical.

2. This makes me so angry!

This spot was always a 'must do' visit, during my many trips to La Jolla. The seals are so much fun to watch. It is beyond my ability to comprehend why anyone would harass these beautiful animals.

10. There seems to be some conflict there over beach access for swimming, and protection

of the seals. It could be that these people were hoping to scare the seals away as part of that controversy... but it's more likely that they're just assholes, I guess.

4. The seals are better behaved than the humans, it seems

I wish those two airheads had been bitten. The bite can be pretty nasty and would have generated news reports that might discourage other animal abusers, at least for a while.

Sometimes idiots serve best when they serve as negative examples of what can happen to you when you're acting out.

8. I was there over New Year's.

omg, the smell! I'm surprised they got close enough. Having said that, I hope someone can find them and fine them. There's no excuse for their actions.

12. When I was a kid the Children's Pool was for children.

Seals and sea lions didn't get anywhere near people back then because people shot them.

I hear there's huge controversy now because the sea mammals have returned. Some very wealthy people who live along the shore don't like them or their smell.

With all that's messed up in the world (and getting worse) it's nice to know sea mammals are returning to their traditional beaches and it's good so many people getting upset when they see idiots harassing them.

16. Yes, I think that's what this is about

We've been to this place many times. We're northern California people but go down there where it's warm for vacations when we get a chance. We used to swim, kayak (they would rent them right there) and snorkel at this little cove. The seal (or sea lions, I forget which) moved in and took over, making it so people weren't allowed to swim there. We had no problem with that, glad to make room for our marine mammal friends, but there are people who had issues with it, thinking it was their spot, I suppose.

Up here in northern California, a different conflict exists, between salmon fishermen and seals (or sea lions, I'm hopeless). They trail the salmon fishing boats, wait for one to get hooked by a fisherman, and before the fish can be brought into the boat, they yank the salmon off the hook and promptly chomp it down. I've seen this personally a number of times, and it's happened to me a couple of times (I have yet to land a salmon). Kind of funny, I suppose. After they chomp the salmon, they often stick their noses in the air while looking at the fisherman and taunt the person verbally, or so it seems. Unfortunately, some people's livelihood is impacted by this behavior, and their remedy is sometimes to shoot the offending animals. Not good at all. I'm pretty sure these people are rarely caught.
