PHOTOS: 35,000 Protesters Demand Immediate Climate Action At ‘Largest Climate Rally In U.S. History’

By Rebecca Leber

On Sunday, an estimated crowd of 35,000 people joined the Forward On Climate rally in Washington, DC, where protesters delivered a clear message to President Obama: Take immediate action on climate change by rejecting the Keystone XL tar sands pipeline. Organizers of the rally described as the “largest in U.S. history” also called on the president to issue overdue Clean Air Act standards to limit carbon pollution from power plants.

At the rally, 350.org President Bill McKibben said the “easiest, simplest, purest action” Obama could take on the climate is to reject”this long fuse to one of the biggest carbon bombs on earth,” the Keystone XL pipeline.

31. It'd be nice, but I doubt it

Anyone who hasn't get the message on climate change by this point is living in denial, refusing to believe anything not approved by the Tea Party cult's supreme leaders.

2. It is good that they have specific demand.

Start here: reject the Keystone pipeline.

When we have that accomplished; we will have a new, very specific, demand.

That's how it needs to be done. IMHO

14. We had hundreds of thousands in the streets before the Iraq war.

It made no difference at all.

That's what happens when the same folks who build the weapons also happen to own the TeeVee and radio stations.

The minimal coverage (when given) always underestimates the crowd size and/or otherwise marginalizes the event.

Unless it's dumb-ass teabaggers, of course. (as someone else noted).

16. Just got back from the DC rally.

I'm still kind of floating. It was a great experience. So many determined people, so many creative signs and costumes. As we stood in front of the White House, my daughter asked me, "Do you think he's looking out the window?" All I could say was, "I sure hope so."

My laugh of the day was the marcher dressed as Santa Claus holding a sign that read "Coal is naughty. I'm pro snow."

be an exaggeration to suggest that every demonstrator at that rally represented the sentiments of tens of thousands who were not there.

23. Hopefully the President will kill this pipeline for it is quintessentially

a Koch brothers wet dream that will do untold damage to the environment, solely for the enrichment of a very few, and to his legacy: it would be, imo, a sellout to right-wing interests to the everlasting damage to the country, we the people, and to promotion of the general welfare.

Last night I saw the movie 'Age of Stupid' and I couldn't sleep all night. It's horrible what's coming our way.

25. Yay!

I went to DC and got back late last night. It was much bigger than I was expecting. Everybody was positive and friendly toward the President. We're "helping him do the right thing". Not sure if I just drank the kool aid or what, but I don't think he's going to approve this pipeline. He'll do the right thing.

29. President Obama already got the message awhile ago, but will be fighting an uphill battle.

I'm glad so many are making their voices known, but the real battle needs to be in the congress, where the intrenched Right Wing will pass this legislation regardless of how many protest. In 2014 everyone who is capable needs to support their Left leaning politician with every spare moment they have. Your volunteer time if it can be given will be more important than your money.
