I broke my freakin' arm saying happy valentines day to a republican.

Yesterday I was talking politics outside the 7-11with a very republican looking guy .He told me he didn't like Obama but was vague as to why. His thinking was liberal but he feared communism and all the sort of shit republicans are told to fear, he bemoaned the taxes, yadda yadda, but he also supported universal health care, gun control and the rich paying their fair share, though he was cynical gun control would help gun violence. He was not rude or defensive about my questions, but he also was jaded about the public. He said he used to be more idealistic in his youth, but believed idealistic people were too few in number to change things in this country in a meaningful way.I explained why he might be very wrong about that, explained a conservative county like this one isn't the best model for the rest of the country and fox news isn't news, and he begrudgingly agreed with me,that the news is skewed and this county is a limited example. We had a good 20 minute conversation,me in my turquoise Mohawk and he in his khakis and short graying hair.He seemed to have given up on many of his old beliefs, and that made me happy inside. I wished him a happy valentine's day. .I turned to head home and tripped in the parking lot over a small raised part of the cement, and bang I hit the ground and my arm got it. I laid there a minute waiting for the pain to subside before I got up,and the republican guy I was talking to and another guy in the parking lot helped me get up and they got me ice and were very kind about helping me up.I walked home and by time I hit the door it was definite I had broken my arm.It fucking' huuurrt.
I went to a patient first type urgent care place, xrays showed the radius was a clean break right through it and they splinted my arm sent me home. Today I go to the doc, probably will be in a cast for who knows how long. I am very thankful for medicaid, and I fear for people who in my situation would not be able to get their arm fixed, and would just muddle through. We really need universal health care. And yesterday a Republican agreed with me on that!

4. thanks

it hurts a bit worse today, had it propped on pillows last night, cats purring against it, and my meds for when my back pain flares has become a godsend for my arm yesterday and today.I only take the pain meds when I really need them. So I have a nearly full bottle and it's 4 months old..Tramadol does not work on me if I take it as pills.
But the pain meds make me sorta derp..and tired and that sucks. I hate the way they effect my mind, but thankful they control pain. and I am very thankful for the spell check function right now..lol...

25. Tramadol pills didn't work for the pain from my severe gall bladder infection either.

Glad you found something that works. Hospitals have a reputation for not treating medicaid patients for pain. Apparently, we're all drug addicts who aren't to be believed.

27. My nickname for pain pills is "stupid pills"

Not only do I hate taking the stupid things, but they make me stupid. And they don't really control the kind of pain I get. They just make me so groggy and stupid I don't care that I hurt.

Get that arm taken care of and take calcium supplements with vitamin D. My husband bought me some that are chewable and taste like candy - first time I've been happy to take the amount of calcium a day recommended.

Take care!

29. Tramadol may as well be a sugar pill. Useless!

Hope you get to feeling better. Sounds like you had a great talk. Sorry it resulted in a broken limb.

6. 6 to 8 weeks!

Oh holy hell. LOL I eat with my left hand,I will be dropping alot of forks..And I'm ambidextrous, but not totally.
I already got me a thin long wooden dowel for an itchy stick picked out. I'm using the one from when I broke my elbow.

8. You've broken a bone before?

You probably need a calcium supplement. It will be inconvenient for a while, but the time passes quickly - happened to hubby.

13. Be careful with the stick! It gets very moist and damp inside a cast. Sticking anything in there can

lead to tears in your skin from scratching, which can lead to infection. I have seen some very nasty wounds when the cast has come off. Good luck and heal fast!

19. DO NOT go poking that stick down inside your cast!!!!!

Your doctor must surely have told you how dangerous that can be!!

24. HeY

It'll feel like someone else is eating for a while (ha)!

I'm no stranger to falling--done it twice in the last year, while "walking" of all things. The last time I cracked some ribs, took six weeks to fully be liberated from the pain.

These days I'm careful as hell. Better to not get hurt than to suffer through weeks of healing, though you know, sometimes you just can't avoid it, things are going to happen.

I actually did this thing for a while in my youth, where I switched to doing everything with my left hand, I rolled pizza skins, put on condiments, even learned to play tennis fairly well to where I swapped hands with a buddy, and he didn't even notice. It's more about training the brain, and when that arm heals, you'll be better for it. You might even keep on doing some things left-handed.

11. thank you peace 13

I'm gonna reiki the shit out of it once it's in the cast. and cat purring is the exact hertz of an ultrasound treatment, purr actually helps healing like physical therapy ultrasound treatments. During my back flare ups I wake up to find sparkle up against my neck purring like crazy and bear with his body right up against my back fully stretched out purring up a storm and when I get up often I don't need to take more pain pills for hours, sometimes if it's a mild flare up,I don't need to take any.. my cats haven't been more than two feet away from me since I busted my arm.

17. Except for the broken arm part, that's the way to do it, undergroundpanther --

calmly reaching out to connect with one person at a time.

In my experience, it's often possible to find unexpected things in common that way. And maybe to make people think twice about the junk they hear on Faux news. . . .

Hope your arm heals quickly!

26. Was it your dominant arm?

I had a broken finger (dominant hand/dominant finger) and it was a freak thing too. I had to have surgery and couldn't get it wet for weeks. So sorry, buddy. It's not fun to have a broken bone. Feel better. You got a great story out of it though!!
