This is why for the most part you don't want asteroids

Careful, this is LOUD. Meteorites are hitting parts of Russia as the largest is coming in for a near-miss tomorrow afternoon our time.

2. I believe the one set to do a near-miss (hopefully) is big enough to do more than that :(

4. Video compilation below

I thought they were supposed to explode when they enter the atmosphere, not when they hit the ground

5. Sonic boom

I believe the sound is the sonic boom from it entering the atmosphere. It would occur several seconds after the meteorite passes by. These are called fireballs or bolides. Pretty cool, though I would personally have a Ted Nugent moment if I ever saw one live - if ya know what I mean.

Here's a link to more info, specifically regarding one that happened in the USA in the 70's.

7. Sounds like a sonic boom.

If 2012DA14 hit, it would destroy a city. And it's missing us by a mere 15 minutes.

If Earth was 15 minutes further in its orbit, it would hit us. (Or later, not sure which.)

Go to Planetary Radio and listen to their last two podcasts where they talk about 2012DA14 in a bit of depth.

8. And we thought hemorrhoids were bad

How many other 'oids' are out there, just waiting for their chance to do us in?

9. How cool! With all those videos, they are almost certain to find it, IF

it survived to the ground, and IF it indeed was a bolide and not a comet.

Will be interesting to learn how this shakes out in the next few days.
