3. Bureaucratic Book Burning

Libraries remain the greatest guardian for a free society, not a gun. Hitler burned books first. Than people. Getting rid of libraries is the canary in the coal mine for the death of democracies.

6. libraries help people learn to LIKE reading, Mr. Deary

Close the libraries and Deary's precious book sales will drop like a rock, because fewer people will feel the pleasure of picking up a book, thumbing through it in a public space, and taking it home to read at their leisure free of charge. Libraries help to make reading popular and pleasurable. Without public libraries encouraging reading in generation after generation, books will become little more than references for the scholarly and playthings for a cultural elite, as they were before public libraries. Deary isn't advocating the end of public libraries, he's pushing for the end of the modern literature market, and he appears not to know it.

How can anyone who thinks about this for more than 5 minutes come to such a shockingly wrong conclusion as our dear Mr. Deary?

7. What a moron. It all starts at some level of "free".

TV, movies, books...

First you learn to love it, then you are willing to pay for it, then you are hooked!

9. Libraries buy the damn books

other than the used ones that people donate for book sales to raise money to buy more books.
Guess his idea of "free" is that one book might be read by 20 people over the course of a year.

34. And book sharing!

Imagine the nerve of people loaning / giving away books to friends after they have read them! LOL.

On a serious note, the only reason I started reading Harry Potter was because my dog was sniffing around and then I saw the book discarded in the bushes back in 1999 or 2000. So I read it, gave it a positive word-of-mouth to others, and gave it away so others could read it too.

clothes have a limited shelf life per each kid before being passed on to another kid. Books work the same way.

This guy sounds like he just writes crappy books because he knows nothing about kids.

14. Asshole.

Stupid asshole.

75% of the books I buy, I read from the library first to determine the value of purchasing my own copy. Fuck-brain probably never thought of that, I guess.

Go out to the beach at Land's End, and keep walking. If you make it to New York, turn around and go back. If you don't make it, good fucking riddance, creep...

BTW: Many talented but unsung writers who will never achieve literary super-stardom depend upon purchases from libraries in order to eke out an existence. He probably never though of that, either...

15. what a jerk...

The reliance on the digital age and a misguided belief that it is somehow invulnerable to compromise, destruction and control is complete idiocy. Libraries would be the the most sought after and protected institutions in the event of complete civilization collapse. Or in an extreme example, Book of Eli.

21. Deary is a moron. The purpose of a library is the ability to research, not the promulgation

of books as an item of mass consumption. If this guy thinks he's getting robbed by the library, he's mistaken. People who want his books will buy them. The point of the library is that 40 years from now, when his books are long out of print, there will be copies preserved so that some literature major will be able to write a dissertation titled "Pedophilic imagery in the Children's Literature of the Early 21st Century".

22. I say...bullshit!

Libraries around my area are always packed with people. There is one bookstore within a 20 mile radius...and that area is very congested and a pain to get to. People use the computers, they use the quiet rooms for study groups, and reading in general. Ours has a fantastic DVD rental program with lots of great titles and they have the "Friends of the Library" sales all the time to generate more money.

These asshats want to kill off the libraries, simply because they don't want the citizens of the country to be informed and literate. That should be enough of a reason to keep giving to and using your public libraries!

There is no way that libraries are going to die!

and just about everybody marks "yes"

We have a great library, but the taxpayers here vote to approve the funds yearly...no votes, no money...it is not forced on us.

32. He sounds like musicians and moviemakers

"Waaah! Waaah! I don't get paid every single time somebody gets to preview my work for free!"

They all need to shut up. Libraries, mp3 downloads, YouTube, this is all the greatest advertising for commercial artists that there has ever been.

Keith Olbermann credits the (ZOMG! Illegal!) uploading of his early Special Comments to YouTube, as the reason he became so famous among lefties. When those videos went viral, people tuned in to his TV show.

As a magazine article writer, I know a lot of people will read my work for free. And guess what? I like it that way, because I'm not stupid and filled with shortsighted greed. I know that getting my byline out there means that it will help me sell my work to other editors.

33. I think that a society that creates libraries is truly civilized

Otherwise it's all about survival. Which is great and everything, but it's just survival, not civilization.

The fact that there is such a need in humans to learn, to think, to create, to imagine... it's incredibly moving. I love our instinct to create libraries the way I love our instincts to hope and dream and share. It is special.

38. Another children's writer, Julia Donaldson, gave a refreshingly sensible response

http://www.guardian.co.uk/books/2013/feb/15/julia-donaldson-libraries-terry-deary-attack

Deary is someone who likes to be controversial - he has also said that schools serve no purpose beyond keeping kids off the street and they should be able to leave at 11; and that most historians are 'seedy and devious' (to be fair he used Niall Ferguson as his main example, and I'd say that Ferguson does indeed deserve the comment!)
