Perfect timing: Living to tell this tale...

I would like to share some excellent news with the DU community. Three days ago I suffered a major coronary and managed to contact the right person to take me to the correct hospital that had a heart physician who had just arrived that morning back from spending 3 weeks in Rwanda on a mission. I came to learn after my discharge the next day that 'it was the big one' for me, and had I been transferred from another facility or had to go to another one 30 minutes away that it was certain that I would not have survived. I am grateful to be alive and to the excellent cath lab staff at Seventh Day Adventist Hospital who worked quickly to save my life. My left ventral artery was completely blocked and a piece of plaque had dislodged and proceeded to clot/block that area of my heart while I was doing yard work on a balmy 50 degree Monday in the Pac. NW. Happy Valentines Day to all and just want to add that it is National Heart Month!

6. Lucky indeed!

My best friend had the presence of mind to get me to the hospital in short order! This is the perfect example of a friend saving another friend's life that I can think of! Luckily for me that is! Thanks for your comment. Happy Valentines Day!

10. Congratz now a word of Critically dire advise...

I too suffered the exact same predicament 7 years ago. But i was not financially able to afford follow ups or physical therapy. I ended up laying in bed for a very great amount of time and have developed clots in my legs...and sciatica.

If i can say anything to save you my agony, it is this..start a physical therapy regiment as soon as you are healed and KEEP it up. No matter how tiring or how much you don't want to walk and exercise now...it will destroy you later if you let it go like i did...

Get healthy, stay healthy, be healthy...wish someone told me these words before it was too late.

Drew.

17. Wise words of advice, Thank You!

Excellent advice and I will certainly heed your words. Sorry that you have had such a painful experience convalescing. This past weekend I already pushed the envelope a bit by going on a longish walk with family. I'm very grateful for my good fortune!

11. Happy heart day!

So good to hear of your good fortune in getting the incredible help you needed and I hope you will have a great recovery and a healthy heart.

How fortunate we are that such miraculous care for our hearts is available now. Two weeks ago my dear friend's beautiful baby girl of 6 weeks was found to have a hole in her heart and had to have open heart surgery to repair it. What an exhausting and anxious time to watch one so tiny, but the staff at Children's Hospital's cardiac unit in Denver did a superb job. She is home, all 11 tubes are out and she is getting back to her happy and cooing self with a healthy heart just beating away. And almost back to her birth weight of 7 pounds. What a wonderful valentine to have during National Heart Month.

18. My best wishes to your friend and child!

It's humbling to think that I had 50 + good yeas before my catastrophic event. It's quite another thing entirely to be a helpless baby having to face such challenges @ birth. We live in marvelous times to have such splendid health care options. Thanks for sharing your Valentine's Day story with me!

12. Great to be you today!

Sincerely.

I had my own heart issues in early 2010 (a Staph A infection of my heart cost me two valves and a chunk of the muscle itself). My issue was not minute-by-minute critical like yours, but felt more like a bad flu that became pneumonia. My 3rd trip to ER got me admitted, and a brilliant diagnostician in ICU put all the clues together and came up with the right diagnosis.

It was NOT an easy diagnosis, (I was later told that most GPs would never see a case of this in their entire career) and I owe my life to him...and to the fact that I was irked about being so sick for so long, and kinda forced the issue. I was later told I had made it by about 24 hours, and mine was the most damaged heart that either my cardiologist or the surgeon had ever seen anyone survive.

I COMPLETELY share your joy, relief and gratitude....with the hope that I am not projecting those feelings onto you.

19. You aren't kidding!!

I am most fortunate to be alive today Bob! When most of us think of heart disease, we think in terms of blocked arteries, coronary, or stroke. Staph infection is insidious indeed! Glad for you that you had it diagnosed correctly fairly early on. Of course your persistence made all that possible! You certainly aren't projecting the feelings of joy, relief and gratitude! It's good to share them with others who know them intimately! Cheers!

13. Oh, my!

So sorry this happened to you, but thank goodness everything went well! I'm presuming that your artery & the affected area of your heart were both cleared during your stay? I hope so!

Take care, Fedaykin, & welcome to DU!

Yes, thank goodness, and thank God all went well. Aside from feeling a little tired out this weekend, it's still a shock to me that I have had such a life changing event! Thanks for your welcome words and I hope your weekend has been filled with warmth and happiness! Take care as well!

I enjoyed the peak of good health. Genetics is something one can't run from, or play roulette with! If you're inclined, strengthen your core, it will help slow down that slipping away effect. I wish you good health and peace of mind!

24. Hi Sam!

Thanks for the belated Valentines wish! I had a most lively weekend with my niece (7) and my nephew (10), not to mention my sister and her husband visiting me. They missed their uncle, and I was wholly attentive as I could be. We are 5 hours apart by car, so we haven't had much chance to visit in the last 5-6 months. After their departure I came online to DU and answered all the fine people's like yourself who are continuing to wish me well! I feel blessed, and I hope your weekend has been as wonderful as mine in some small way! In a big way Sam I say hello and thanks! Take good care!
