"Combat Medals For Drone Pilots Nowhere Close To Battle"

Combat award citations often include the phrase "for heroic achievement in connection with ground combat operations," but that's set to change with a new award announced for troops that launch drone strikes or direct cyberattacks against the enemy.

The blue, red and white Distinguished Warfare Medal will be given to servicemembers that demonstrate "extraordinary achievement" related to a military operation after 9/11. But unlike every other combat award, it does not require the recipient to risk her or her life, according to the Associated Press.....

An official speaking on condition of anonymity prior to the announcement from the Pentagon has indicated that the award will be higher ranking than a Bronze Star, but lower than the Silver Star the nation's third-highest award, the Army Times reports.

The medal will give the military a way to recognize a single act that directly affects a combat operation, doesn't involve an act of valor, and warrants an award higher than the Bronze Star, according to Pentagon criteria.

My father won both a Bronze Star and a Silver Star in the Battle of the Bulge (80th Div. Artillery). If he were alive today, this travesty would kill him.

1. They gave more medals to people at the Pentagon than were in Grenada at the time.

7. I might be able to see a unit commendation award in much the same way as....

...air squadrons and naval units earn them, but medals for the individual efforts of a drone pilot who faces nothing more than the danger of carpel tunnel syndrome? Not only "NO", but "Heck, NO"!!

My Dad was a nose-gunner on a B-24 heavy bomber during WWII, and he would be just as pissed as your father would have been about this nonsense.

10. Question, was that over Europe?

My uncle was the pilot for a B-24 that did European runs. Who knows, they might have met each other.

11. Dad was based in an airfield in southern Italy and did runs over Germany, Austria, Rumania,....

....Bulgaria, northern Italy, and the German held portions of old Yugoslavia. The airbase he flew out of was Pantenella near Canosa, Italy.

Where was your uncle based?

Can you upload them to the PSN server so that they show together with your gaming achievements?

15. If the medal is engraved with number of innocents killed then I say go for it.

I think this drone thing is out of control. Do not underestimate the stress of sitting in a building killing people on the other side of the planet and then going home to eat dinner with the fam. It is crazy that we ask 'soldiers' to do this. This violence will begin to show up more and more on our home turf, not in the form of drone kills but violence within the communities. That is the nature of this 'fighting of the terrorist'. We are rotting from within.

To those who think this type of warfare is fine then I say...imagine your kids or grandkids on the playground at school today. Missiles fall from the sky to kill the man who lives next to the school but the kids are hit in the take down. Good news, they got the neighbor! You are outraged and full of inconsolable despair. You can not comprehend that the children are gone and the neighborhood is a shambles. But alas you will have to take a deep breath and accept it in the name of the almighty war on terrorism or better said..what goes around comes around and folks we are in for a world of hurt when we get ours. There should be not a squawk from one of us!

It is time to speak up or shut up because nothing good is coming to us if this activity is allowed to continue!

16. Here's the medal.

I have my dad's bronze star and purple heart from the battle of the bulge here in my office.

That rumbling sound is about 10 million veterans rolling over in their graves.

17. My dad received the Distinguished Flying Cross and two Air Medals,

along with numerous other awards during his career and tour in Vietnam. He worked to develop RECONNAISSANCE drones. He would be completely appalled by this - not only the use of drones for attacks, but awarding medals for basically playing a glorified video game.

This is a sad day for the military.

ETA:

They were providing aerial recon support for a recon drone over NVN when they got chased by a MIG. My dad was in the back seat flinging chaff and doing whatever else an electronic warfare officer does. They got away (dodged some bullets) and saved the drone.
Oh, and my dad's plane was unarmed.

18. This seems like an admission that drone strikes are acts of war.

It follows that the CIA is engaged in acts of war and the Congress has not sanctioned such wars in the various places that these strikes have been and are occurring.

20. Booo . . . . . .

This makes a mockery of valor on the field of battle.

These armchair warriors risk nothing.

What self-important silliness.
