Wonder if any DUers can personally confirm that 'burner' actually means tear gas.

But they know the scanner traffic is out there...questions were asked...and whether they are right or not, it just looks bad. They started to get nervous when the "burner" questions came up.

20. Yup, the press is asking the obvious questions.

Not related, but reminds me of a hazmat incident. I asked the assistant chief what chemical was involved? (They had the chemistry lab on wheels otherwise known as a hazmat truck on the scene, with another hazmat unit)

I don't know.

I pressed the chief, I used to do firefighting like for real. They knew, the trucks can identify commonly encountered chemicals fairly fast, and medic crews need that info to treat patients.

Well two hours later we got what it was. Malathion. They hate it when the reporter has half a clue.

for those who were listening to the scanner is the number of times the dispatcher said the fire department was asking if they should move in and were held back by the sheriff's dept.

if there is enough evidence that they tried to hard to burn the place and not hard enough to get him out without burning it.

19. This investigation stinks to high hell

The press is on to the crap cop job on this one. The burner scanner traffic is out everywhere now and the cops look foolish denying they started that fire. And of course the cops wouldn't answer the question "Was Dorner given the chance to surrender?" That's when the press conference was shut down.

I don't support Dorner. He was (is?) a crazed murderer, but I don't doubt corruption by the LAPD. And last night, officials coming out saying they had the body of Dorner, then 'Oh no! There's no body yet!' - completely ridiculous. Anyone who's ever covered a fatal fire knows it was WAY too early to positively say there was a body inside, but the cops were adamant early, panicked and retracted.

Don't even get me started on the cops shooting anyone and everything that moved as part of their "investigation."

Just plain fishy.

24. Corruption by LAPD??

The occurrences near Big Bear had nothing to do with LAPD.

What happened yesterday was San Bernardino county Sheriffs and helpers, no doubt under operational orders by the county.

LA is miles from Big Bear. No LAPD there last night.

Waiting to deploy on orders of Riverside Sheriffs. That little tidbit angered LAPD. They sent them to Riverside, but...it was not their jurisdiction.

That was reported by the LA times.

33. Well, that's probably for the better.

I lived in Ontario for ten years, so I know that area of San Bernardino county a bit. Visited Big Bear, Lake Arrowhead, San Berdoo, and environs many times. The mountains are lovely.

The one thing I miss about SoCal... That, and some great Mexican food. Here in rural MI all we have is Taco Smell... Er, Bell.

Nevertheless, I stand corrected. Keep me honest, Nadine.

36. Well, we went for a drive yesterday

I will be visiting Julian a few times during fire season. So, cooling our heels in the cold winter air (we are wimps, only 40) while drinking coffee and watching the word go bye.

We found a group of Irvine motor cops (25 of them) there...for a training ride.

Shall we say we went to the scanner...

25. They Are Right, And That's All There Is To It

Anybody who questions their facts of the case, are conspiracy nuts. Everybody is just jumping to conclusions. Anybody knows that "burners" refers to non-flammable tear gas. Accusing the good-guy cops of any malicious actions, is patently unfair and unjustified.

Cops are like lawyers. They're often paid to LIE, and make sure that the facts they put in their reports, are the facts which everyone accepts as such. We all know that cops are above reproach, and even suggesting otherwise, makes you a conspiracy weirdo.

No more questions please.

29. And that Dorner was a real angel?

Not that you said that.

But maybe you ought to consider...

That when a bad guy shoots at a cop, that the cop(s) are very likely going to shoot back.

When police officers are shot at, and some are shot by a guy, the police will definitely take an action they wouldn't normally take. The guy lying there bleeding/dying may well be a respected friend. Other innocent people in the area could be in extreme peril if the guy gets loose.

Then, there's his manifesto. Whatever you make of it, it outlines his intent to kill people with no regards than to inflict guilt on innocents to get at the putative guilty. In no world do I call that justice.

That Dorner was a cop. He knows how police react to these things. Yet, he did what he did anyway.

Knowing that. I would authorize deadly force in a second. In fact, every police officer is probably authorized to use deadly force in such a situation.

Now, the fire? I hope it was accidental, but I am not sure. However, at that time the SB sheriffs had every right to shoot to kill.

37. None is saying he was an angel

But many of us are raising questions. And two other ex officers confirming what Doner claimed (not shocking if you know any of LAPD) should make people ask the other relevant question...what the hell is going on inside the Los Angeles Police Dept?

41. Oh, I agree with you there.

But some people are questioning the ethics of LE killing Dorner up near Big Bear. I am arguing that he, of all people, should have known the consequences of shooting cops. His manifesto alone would have LE on edge and justifiably alarmed.

Some people apparently thought they should have just handcuffed him and brought him in for trial. I have been merely pointing out that every cop on this case knew that was probably not in the cards.

I've said it all along here. This is a clusterfuck.

If the LAPD gets looked at because of this, that's good. But regardless, nobody wins when these things happen. Nobody.

But I think there was a very dangerous, never before used option in the US, would have qualified as an attempt...anesthesia gas. (Which I might add, is also highly flammable)

I still think the investigation is fishy as I noted up-thread, but I believe the cops were correct in using deadly force. Dorner was a threat to civilians in addition to armed police.
