Worst cruise ever

Four thousand Texans trapped in a metal tube with blown generators and bad ventilation.

http://news.nationalpost.com/2013/02/13/cruise-line-downplays-reports-of-hot-filthy-conditions-on-disabled-ship-in-gulf-of-mexico/

The ship left Galveston, Texas, for a four-day cruise last Thursday with 3,143 passengers and 1,086 crew members. The ship was about 150 miles off Mexico’s Yucatan Peninsula on Sunday when an engine room fire knocked out its primary power source, crippling its water and plumbing systems and leaving it adrift on only a backup power.

No one was injured in the fire, but Carnival spokeswoman Joyce Oliva said Tuesday that a passenger with a pre-existing medical condition was taken off the ship as a precaution.

....................

A cold front was expected to cross the central Gulf where the vessel is under tow, bringing north and northwesterly winds of 15 to 25 mph and seas of 4 to 6 feet, said Dennis Feltgen, spokesman for the National Hurricane Center.

However, such conditions shouldn’t affect conditions aboard ship, said Bill Segelken, spokesman for the Coast Guard Galveston command center.

The ship was about 200 miles south of Mobile, Ala., as Tuesday faded into Wednesday, the Coast Guard said. Carnival says the ship is expected to arrive in Mobile on Thursday.

3. What in the world makes you think there are 4,000 TEXANS on board?

Or is this some kind of backhand swipe at Texas?

16. I haven't cruised since my uncle sent me to Germany on the Buckner

What are the ships like inside? I've seen pictures and it doesn't look like there's room to swing a cat. They must depend heavily on the air conditioning system. The Buckner had its faults bt lack of ventilation wasn't one of them.

18. Swear to Jesus, there's no ill intent

in the OP or my comments. Is any notice of Texas now proscribed? It is an interesting story that could get very ugly if peple start to panic. I'll bet the Texas media is all over it.

south in a negative light now, apparently.

But we Californians are still fair game.

9. The "Yarmouth Castle" cruise ship sank off the coast of Bermuda in '65 with a loss of 89 lives. . .

And in 1991, the Oceanos sank off the coast of South Africa. No one died, but not for lack of trying.

When word spread among the Oceanos' crew that the engine room was flooded and the ship was going down, the Captain and his crew took to the lifeboats and abandoned ship, leaving the 571 passengers to fend for themselves. Were it not for the members of the musical band on board, led by Moss Hills, it might have proved a shocking disaster. Hills and others in the band managed to organize the passengers, get them to the high side of the sinking ship, and notify the South African air force who sent helicopters to airlift everyone off.

So yeah, a fire and backed up plumbing, even in a 25 knot wind with choppy seas, might be bad but I doubt it counts among "the worst cruises ever." Probably not even in the top 50.

21. my hub's great aunt died onthe titanic. my FIL's 2 bestfriends SURVIVED the Indianapolis'

sinking.

As an aside, we were booked on the Triumph for 3/21. Just rescheduled for May and got a 25% discount refund. By May it'll be the cleanest, safest boat it can be.

You're correct. This ain't exactly a disaster.

The Republican Caribbean Cruise
Steaming past Guantánamo, en route to the Cayman Islands, a boatload of Republicans ponder the plight of a party at sea.
