And God weighs in on the subject.

A few hours after the Pope's announcement, lightning struck St. Peter's. (and the photo has since been supported by a video of the same strike--so we know it is real).

I don't know about the rest of you, but the Catholic Church has filled me with quite a bit of shame. They way they have covered up so much child abuse and the way the Pope has attacked gay people has pushed me so far away from my Catholic roots that I can't even say I'm lapsed or just a bad Catholic. I just cannot support a church who dresses their leader in clothes that cost so much you could feed a village for a month with the cost of his fur collar or his silky cape. I cannot support a church that moves a pedophile from church to church allowing him ruin life after life.

And, honestly, I have a gut reaction of dislike for the current Pope. I do not know why.

But I will be glad to see a new Pope. I hope it is someone who can lead to some healing.

2. I've put too much distance to feel any shame, but I know what you mean

I've never understood the need to bling up the man who is supposed to be Christ's representative on earth.

I wonder how different things would have been, had John Paul I survived the Vatican. He seemed to be a humble and progressive man.

7. The bling causes me the most distress

money given to help the poor...spent on rings and furs and silk.

Proof of their true intent.

3. I hear you, my dear DonRedwood...

And I so agree.

I left the Catholic church decades ago, before my marriage and my children. I never looked back.

9. Another "fallen Catholic" here. And I completely understand your dislike for Ratzinger.

I feel the same.

But I don't have your hope about any healing within the organization. They are proud of their refusal to change, and they are too entrenched in their abuse of countless groups of people (children, women, gay people) to be able to heal any time soon.

I do, though, still and always, love the nuns on the bus.

12. I know a couple of wonderful nuns

THey work for good, live a pretty bare life, and they share everything they can. No firs, silks and bling for those lady.

Ratzinger--from the first time I saw him, I felt...repelled. I haven't had a reaction like that to many people. Putin maybe.
