3. Because he is a pedophile enabler. He deserves our scorn and ridicule.

5. He deserves our scorn and ridicule.

IMO so do people who go after an 85 year old man and so do people who carry guns and so do people that murder others and the list goes on an on w/me. What Ratzinger knew and when he knew ... who the hell knows.

Let him retire and let it go and hope that they put another pope in that will serve the people better.

Ratzinger was said to be nothing more than an "interim" pope when placed. I doubt the Vatican et al. knew he'd live so long!

9. That is merely the most serious of his known sins.

There's also his misogyny and homophobia that he preaches to the world from his pulpit, his condemnation of contraception, which killed people in Africa due to HIV/AIDS, his financial shenanigans which have only recently come to light, other sins of the church that happened under his watch (either as Pope or his earlier high-ranked positions as a Cardinal) such as slavery in Ireland...

Maladict is an evil man, and the Roman Catholic Church would be wise to take the opportunity to move towards some extremely serious reforms.

Excuse me while I join you in heaping continuous scorn and ridicule on Ratzi the Nazi.

4. He deserves the same respect he gave to secular folks, gays, and women. Far less than in this toon

If we sharpen up that salute/wave to make it more obviously hitleresque, add a swastika armband, and put an altar boy's hand in his instead of a suitcase it would be closer, but still not quite what he and his ilk deserve. If you think the pope deserves more respect, consider how much reduced the spread of AIDS would be had he renounced the opposition to condoms his organization leads worldwide, and think how much the vistims would prefer to be lightly mocked in cartoons compared to what they face.

6. Wow. You're REALLY going to go there?

Because he allowed other old men to sexually abuse little children with no recourse? Is that not enough for you? Have you lost ALL of your humanity? Talk about making someone sick.

8. Shame on you for caring more about pedophiles than their victims.

The pope can go to hell for all I care (if there is a hell, he'll be there soon). I have ZERO respect for any faith that protects and coddles child predators. But no, according to you, I need to respect those pieces of shit. Ignorant? Disrespectful? You want me to cut child rapists a break, that's DISGUSTING. He's an awful, awful person and I'm not going to pretend that he has some legacy worth respecting. That's SICK.

10. This is the point Tim Minchin was making...

I'll be classy, and this time post the Pope Song as performed with the Sydney Symphony Orchestra.

12. I had never heard of Tim Minchin before.

But that was pretty good. I'll have to check out some more of his work.

"Fuck you motherfucker, this is language one employs, when one is a little bit cross at motherfuckers fucking boys." Yeah, that pretty much sums it up.

13. SHAME on a church that allows this to happen for decades.

Give me a break. He deserves NO RESPECT and will get none from me.

May his half-million dollar poopmobile take his ass to the hell he believes in.

14. I don't get it.

This pope has done nothing to earn respect. His tenure has performed no favors for any members of this faith and no favors for the general health of the church. Stepping down amidst new revelations of his enabling of crooks and pedophiles may be the best thing he could possibly do to try to preserve the institution, but it also strikes me as cowardly.

17. No, I don't think that would please me at all.

"Better yet kill all of us." That's just a really really bad idea.

The evidence continues to mount that this head of this church enabled pedophiles and was, at best, woefully unobservant with respect to financial affairs. As far as I know, he attacked no children. He did, however, protect those under his authority who did. My quarrel isn't with Catholics, but with this man who was named pope.

I have no more argument with your choice of denomination than most any other, but I do take issue with this man being placed in this position of authority. Hiding corruption and hoping it will go away hasn't served the church well.

19. Responses....

* Unfortunately, "all of those Nazi things" actually happened and can't be wished away;

* His cousin was euthanized by the Nazis in 1941 as part of their program for eliminating people who were disabled and were therefore considered to be "undesirables". His body was more than likely cremated in one of the early SS single-purpose ovens designed to only burn one body at a time. Guess where the Nazis got their ideas about eugenics, sterilization, and euthanasia? If you guessed the US, you would be correct. By 1942-1943, the Nazis were using ovens made by Topf & Söhne that burned continuously to dispose of the millions of bodies of Jews and other people the Nazis were killing in the death camps as well as the concentration/work camps;

* Equally unfortunate is the fact that the Pope did serve in the Hitler Youth as did all Germans starting at age 14 in 1941. In 1943, he was drafted into the German anti-aircraft corps. As German manpower dwindled in 1945, he was then trained in the German infantry. He deserted before the war drew to a close as did a lot of German troops at that time. He states that he wanted nothing to do with the Hitler Youth but we really know nothing of his actual state of mind in 1941. His brother states he was less than enthusiastic about the Hitler Youth, but how do we know he's telling the truth? It's been the practice of a lot of former Nazis to claim they did very little in WWII, or that they were just following orders;

* Yes, I too believe he's got "a lot of things he has never discussed about his life", but I don't think I mean that the same way you do;

* As for being a pedophile, we really don't know one way or the other, but why did he attempt to cover up the actions of priests involved in such behavior? His 2001 letter "De delictis gravioribus" clarified the confidentiality of internal church investigations, as defined in the 1962 document "Crimen Sollicitationis", into accusations made against priests of certain crimes, including sexual abuse. Why did he do this? As a Cardinal, Benedict had been the man in charge of enforcing that document for almost 20 years. While bishops hold the secrecy pertained only internally, and did not preclude investigation by civil law enforcement, the letter was often seen as promoting a coverup. Later, as Pope, he was accused in a lawsuit of conspiring to cover up the molestation of three boys in Texas, but sought and obtained diplomatic immunity from prosecution. Again, why did he do this?

Nobody here is advocating for the killing of all Catholics....I'm not sure where you're getting that unless you're allowing your defensiveness on this issue to get in the way of rational thought.

16. It makes me VERY sick that the Catholic Church chose a former member of the Hitler Youth.....

....to be their Pope. It makes me even more ill to know that he did everything he could to keep the Catholic priest child abuse cases under wraps.

Sorry, but he deserves everything he's getting. Karma.
