GOP Backs Path to Citizenship Unless Obama Supports It

A new Washington Post poll finds that 70% of Americans said they would support a path to citizenship for illegal immigrants, including 60% of Republicans.

But when the same question was asked of a separate sample of respondents, this time with Obama's name attached to it, support dropped to 59% overall and just 39% among Republicans.

Pretty revealing, but not at all surprising.

8. And that is the saddest truth in this study.

It reveals the sophomoric thinking skills these republicans have. They'd rather let the country suffer than succeed under Obama. What fools.

26. It works for Liberals, too:

http://www.salon.com/2013/02/05/when_liberals_ignore_injustice

BY JOAN WALSH

Last year Brown Universityís Michael Tesler released a fascinating study showing that Americans inclined to racially blinkered views wound up opposing policies they would otherwise support, once they learned those policies were endorsed by President Obama. Their prejudice extended to the breed of the presidentís dog, Bo: They were much more likely to say they liked Portuguese water dogs when told Ted Kennedy owned one than when they learned Obama did.

But Tesler found that the Obama effect worked the opposite way, too: African-Americans and white liberals who supported Obama became more likely to support policies once they learned the president did.

This is why framing is so critical.

Just to see the difference between opposition to the President vs opposition to Dems in general.

Maybe Obama should start claiming to oppose the things he really wants to do - use the same kind of reverse psychology you'd use with a three-year-old.

we would have national high-speed rail and Medicare for All in about 2 weeks.

Another option might be for the Pres to say:

"Here's the Complete List of Very Liberal shit I want done. Pass it, and both me and Biden resign immediately, and Mr. Speaker becomes Mr. President."

I bet they are dumb enough to do it.

17. Sometimes polls tell...

...a story. And this is one of them. Frankly, I think issues should be separated from politics on all polls. The election is over. And political polls should themselves stand alone and be unattached to issues. It might be cheaper to put them together, but putting them together changes the outcomes. Also, I think issues should supersede politics. My 2 cents..

20. Why? Issues aren't separated from politics in real life

the fact is the political act of Obama supporting an issue has a very direct effect on how people feel about it.

21. I know issues aren't separated from politics...

...but they should be. Politics have ruined our country. It's like there's an election every day of our lives and we're forced to be at each others throats all the time because of politics. Elections have consequences, and after the elections we need to get down to do the People's business. They have to work together. And WORK. How many days are they actually working this year? I mean in the Halls of Congress? I40 days? Respectfully...

22. It's like the old "welfare poll"...

From the late 80s or early 90s, so I don't have the numbers, but it went like this:

"Do you support aid to poor families?": solid majority
"Do you support welfare?": support drops to about a quarter to a third of the previous number.

27. Context matters, too.

"Do you support military action against Iraq?"

Less than 50 percent just before the ground war started.

"Do you support military action against Iraq?"

Above 90 percent just after the ground war started.

Exact same question.

23. Actually, the data supports Obama's association with proposal

Numbers inply that a greater number of people voted FOR
the measure if associated with Obama.

The overall only lost 11% (70%-59%=11%)

The Repubs went down by 21% (60%-39%=21%)

Which means that more Dems and/or Independants voted for the measure when it was associated with Obama.

with his fingers crossed behind him of course, but it WOULD
remove all possible objections for Teabaggers to support his
bills.

36. I knew it! The GOP are nothing but Grouhco Marxists!

I don't know what they have to say,
It makes no difference anyway,
Whatever it is, I'm against it.
No matter what it is or who commenced it,
I'm against it.

Your proposition may be good,
But let's have one thing understood,
Whatever it is, I'm against it.
And even when you've changed it or condensed it,
I'm against it.

I'm opposed to it,
On general principle, I'm opposed to it.

He's opposed to it.
In fact, indeed, that he's opposed to it!

For months before my son was born,
I used to yell from night to morn,
Whatever it is, I'm against it.
And I've kept yelling since I first commenced it,
I'm against it!
