'Gay-free' prom idea backfires on supporters in Indiana town

Students and the principal at an Indiana high school are disavowing a campaign by parents to organize a "gay-free" prom.

Even the pastor of the church that hosted the original organizing meeting says the church doesn't back the effort to throw a straights-only prom for students at Sullivan High School in Sullivan, Ind., south of Terre Haute.

The movement began after Principal David Springer was asked to clarify whether same-sex couples would be allowed to take part in the traditional grand march before the prom, which is scheduled for April 27.

"Anybody can go to the prom," Springer told NBC station WTHR of Indianapolis. "Of course, a girl could go out with another girl if they didn't have a date or that was their choice."...

1. That's great, but is a boy free to go with another boy?

I hope so.

3. Well, that's what he said about the girls.

I'd like to think the same was true for the boys, but anymore nothing would suprise me.

9. Actually, I'd Think that Now that he Made that Statement He's Made it a Gender Issue

If he says girls can do it and then says boys can't, it's no longer just discrimination based on sexual orientation. Now it's discrimination based on sex. Which is in violation of the Civil Rights Act.

8. Subtle, but...

I noticed that as well.

I'm glad to hear an official response from the school. It seems they would be open to a lawsuit if they supported discriminating against their own students. Instead, the original idea came from a woman who is the reincarnation of Carrie's mother. I hope she becomes a poster critter for hate and ignorance in America.

6. Good to see such antics getting some pushback-even here in "red" Indiana

The tide is turning against hate and bigotry. Slowly but surely it is turning.

7. They Want A "Traditional" Prom?

Does that mean that blacks won't be allowed inside the building unless they're serving drinks or pushing brooms? Or does it mean that all the wimmin-folk will be sold into slavery immediately afterward?

10. And just because a girl goes with a girl

or a boy with a boy doesn't mean they are gay. The could just not have dates and want to have fun with their friends.

11. The thing that bothers me the most about this..

... and believe me, there are many things. But the main thing is the way these "parents" are ostracizing these kids, and telling them that their choices about who they love are wrong. These judgments can have a significant effect on a person later in life.

These are kids, these are teens! It is disgusting. Let the kids do what they want, as long as they stay out of trouble.
