Son of Sam..1976 anyone remember?

Last edited Sun Feb 10, 2013, 10:48 PM - Edit history (1)

I was living in N.Y. when this story broke and by the end, Women were changing their hair color because the serial killer preferred a certain hair color. It was an unbelievable period of fear and terror driven by the media. It was a huge story, on par with the Zodiac and night stalker cases in Ca.

Well we have the beginning of a new one out here. Currently theres a lock down of a Lowes Home Improvement store in L.A. because of a suspected siting of the cop and civilian killer, which has turned into a 24/7 story out here.

My point, The Media just loves this kind of story and just pushes it beyond any kind of reasonable limits.
I feel horrible for the victims and families, this guy is insane, but Its just amazing at how this thing is
being pushed by the media...Fear Sells!!!!

The odds of being killed by a serial killer is 18,000 to 1......I just read this and am trying to link with source..

2. One could make the case for both years.

The hunt began in the summer of 1976 and ended in the summer of 1977.

3. I remember; I was going to college

in Queens, NY, riding a bus home at night. It was a lonely, scary feeling standing on that sidewalk alone in the dark.

13. Meaning what? The murders were overshadowed by the Moon Landing and Chappaquiddick.

15. I guess it was a long protracted west coast thing

The murders, investigations going cold, rumors, rumors, and more rumors. I guess it really got going when the Manson family was identified and we started hearing of the bizarre story unfolding, followed by the trials.

Lots of ink, and all above the fold

Moon Landing?

5. Remember it vividly

Was stationed at the time at the Military Ocean Terminal, Bayonne. My wife and I severely curtailed our trips into the city

6. I remember. We were scared.

But I don't remember NYPD shooting alot of innocent people.

I guess that just happens when THEY feel threatened.

7. I remember it well.

My cousins lived in Brooklyn, and I Long Island. I was working in Manhattan the summer of 1977 ad my mother woke me up when he was caught, if I recall correctly.

8. I was too young at the time, but I have looked into it, and it is a very creepy story

David Berkowitz is a creepy guy for sure. He has said there was a satanic cult actually involved and helping him, and there are still many questions about what happened in the murders, if there were more people involved, and its all spine chilling stuff.

9. 18,000:1 unless there is a serial killer loose in your area.

I favor keeping the story hot so long as the reports are honest.

10. First, Dorner is not a serial killer--he's a spree killer. Not anything like Son of Sam, who

picked and stalked total strangers (IIRC, his dog 'told' him who to kill). Dorner has gone after people(or their relatives) whom he feels has hurt him; he is in the run and is not hiding who he is. That's a spree killer.

Having said that, yes, I do remember how terrified everyone was about Son of Sam/Zodiac/night stalker. I was in Tallahassee, Fl going to school when Ted Bundy killed 4 sorority girls at their dorm, not a mile from my house. The whole town was in an uproar. Later on, after he was caught and we all knew where he had lived in Tallahassee, I figured out that, every day, I walked past where he lived on my way to class. I was also his type--long, light brown hair parted in the middle. I have always thought I was lucky to escape his attention.

14. One cannot compare media coverage without comparing WHAT the media are covering.

12. One killer is no comparison AT ALL to the Son of Sam murders, IMO. "Fear 'sold'" with "SoS" BECAUSE

David Berkowitz was choosing random victims who sat in cars UNDER LIGHTS sometimes. The victims, the notes, the "insanity".... "The Summer of Sam" is a movie. There are BOOKS about the case.

Today's hub-bub is ONLY because the 24/7 channels have to fill up air-time.
