Significant storm damage in Hattiesburg, Miss.
Updated 5:09 pm, Sunday, February 10, 2013

HATTIESBURG, Miss. (AP) An apparent tornado passed through the heart of Hattiesburg on Sunday as part of a wave of severe storms that caused injuries and significant damage.

Forrest County Fire Coordinator Chip Brown said there is major damage in Hattiesburg and to the northeast in Petal, including on the campus of the University of Southern Mississippi. He couldn't confirm injuries.

The storm passed along one of the city's main streets.

"We had a tornado touch down. We have a lot of damage," said Kyle Hopkins, operations director for Forrest County emergency operations

3. We are directly east of Hattisburg and get the storms that hit there.

So I watch Hattisburg very carefully, and sure enough, our local radar is tracking 3 possible tornadoes now.
Luckily, my house is in a somewhat protected area.

29. Injuries so far, per MSNBC's page

Nothing much elsewhere. However any time one of those things hits a densely populated area, expect deaths.

I hope it's just cuts and bruises. I hope most damage was superficial, sheet metal stuff and tree limbs. I hope they recover quickly.

Sandy aid, else it might seem hypocritical to ask for the kind of aid your Congresspersons had voted to deny others.

8. Is that really necessary?

We aren't at fault for what our asshole Congressman Steven Palazzo did. Hattiesburg is probably the most liberal part of Mississippi (lots of colleges/universities) and we, at least in Hattiesburg, believe in caring for our neighbors. Our city is destroyed and our beautiful university of Southern Miss is in shambles, lots of people are hurting. As much as I despise Palazzo, this isn't the time to shift blame to us. There's a lot of pain and destruction here. Just watch this video:

Meanwhile, people I love are hurting. You obviously have no sense of human decency or compassion. I don't care if I get censored at this point. These are my people and the people I love, and you... HOW DARE YOU. I'm disgusted at certain people on DU right now.

By the way, Palazzo, as much as I hate him, actually DID end up voting for the Sandy Bill.

So yeah, forget you guys.

Forcing these people to suffer the consequences of their actions might be the only thing that wakes them up. I doubt many of the people who vote for thugs like Palazzo have much sympathy and compassion for blue state disaster victims.

As a battleground state in the African American Civil Rights movement, Mississippi played an instrumental role in an all-important period of awakening for our nation. As schools were desegregated and tensions rose between blacks and whites, Mississippi and its residents watched as the United States became a changed land in which the rights of all were the rights of equals.

I'm sure all over Hattiesburg right now there are people pawing through the rubble of their homes, looking for family photographs and other priceless personal possessions, thinking, "Gee, if I'd only voted for a Democrat God wouldn't have smitten my community!"

By the way -- there are real live Democrats living all over the South, working from within the Belly of the Beast to try and make things better. We'd appreciate a little encouragement from our "Blue state" partners, rather than mindless broad-brush scorn and condescension.

Fortunately, you are in the minority, and we know that.

64. In *blue* Washington state, we had people that voted against VAWA, Sandy aid and other things.

They are fortunately not my district, but we once boasted a triad of women in power with the Governor and both Senators. We fortunately still have a Democratic Governor and Democrats in the House and Senate. Even with that good news, we are currently afflicted with the most virulent anti-intellectual, anti-choice, anti-government baggers. It can happen to any state.

We have earthquakes, floods, mudslides, forest fire infernos, avalanches and other problems here and shamelessly ask for aid for our veterans, disabled, poor and everything else. Democrats believe in maintaining a model good governance to keep our people united, healthy and safe no matter what their party. We believe in those principles and live them.

When people start to speak against our principles, out of prejudice or bitterness, I'm not sure if they know what is in our party's platform. I hope you reconsider your posts on this thead in line with what the Democratic Party stands for and what makes us better than the Republicans.

return the fine referenced Congressman to office, just as the likes of Congress-critters Ryan, Cantor, Bachmann, and the inimitable Masha Blackburn were returned in November, notwithstanding their loathsome voting records which imo were almost fully inimical to the interests of most of their constituents.
