William Shatner calls out Reddit for racism and hate mongering

“I am apalled by some of the immature, horrifically racist, sexist, homophobic, ethnic… etc.. posts that are just ignored ,”

“Why are these accounts still active? While Reddit has done well in getting interest from the mainstream I just wonder if by allowing these children to run rampant and post whatever they feel will cause the most collateral damage if Reddit is biting off it’s own nose in taking that step to become a mainstream community.”

That comment has so far received more than 2,000 upvotes – a respectable Reddit haul by any measure. But Shatner continued arguing with Redditors in the comments that followed, posting several follow-ups and addenda. There’s this:

“Reddit has been the first ‘mainstream’ site that I have been to that actually appears to allow racists and other hate mongers to group, congregate, incite and spread their hatred. There’s entire subreddits that allow it. What mainstream sites do you think are more racist?”

And this:

“The fact that someone could come here, debase and degrade people based on race, religion, ethnicity or sexual preference because they ‘have a right’ to do so without worry of any kind of moderation is sending the wrong message, in my humble opinion.

I don’t pretend to know where the managers of Reddit wish to go with this site but embracing that kind of culture I feel is counterproductive to where this world is heading and I think that is probably hurting this site.”

“You obviously agree with me that there are ‘SHAMEFUL COMMENTS’ on Reddit that users can downvote and hide but they are still here at the end of the day as are the accounts that make them. Do you believe that the folks who don these cyber masks to post hatred will stop making them because they get downvoted?

Seems that you don’t want an oligarchy which is a valid opinon but I don’t think the current system is working too well.”

1. Kudos to Mr. Shatner.

It is time that those who denigrate others for their color, culture, religion, sex, etc. are brought to task. It is time we all banded together to say ENOUGH!

10. Agreed!

Only social pressure will get racists and bigots to actually stop spouting their nonsense.

2. I've noticed that reddit is pretty strange about accepting/rejecting a post. The text parsing

algorithms seem skewed to me.

Really.

I've given up on it, so others have probably given up on it too, so it's probably getting more extreme and less relevant.

3. I've never visited Reddit, but it's probably no worse than comments posted on YouTube or 4Chan.

Thing is, there's no way to distinguish from those that are genuinely racist, sexist, homophobic, etc, and those that are trolling for reactions like Shatners. Withe regard to the latter, it seems like they were successful.

7. It shouldn't matter that you can't distinguish between trolls and actual racists.

the consequences should be the same for both.

4. Put facebook in that same category

facebook allows hundreds of racist comments to stand every day but censors people who lean democratic or liberal.

6. I had no idea

I don't doubt it, though.

I don't voluntarily give personal info up - and don't tweet or face book.

8. I Consider Facebook An Antisocial Network

It is a place where "friends" blast away at one another without naming them by name but everybody knows who they are talking about. If you want to keep things riled up just go to Facebook.

11. You tube does not have moderators

You practically have to police the site yourself.

9. Good for Mr. Shatner. His face just happened to be on my TV screen when

I saw this post. Star Trek: The Search for Spock is on SyFy right now.

I'm glad someone of his stature and whom enjoys great respect not just among fans is speaking up. I'm also glad to know he's being given positive consideration from Redditors.

14. posts that are just ignored

Just as anything someones says or does that you don't like...you do just that, ignore them, even if you don't approve of what someone says, or their beliefs or disbeliefs, just ignore them.

PS) If he (Shatner) were to read through a lot of the posts on this forum, he or anyone would believe that it should be SHUT down for the anti-this or that, hate spewing, name calling rhetoric that seems to be a favorite pastime for some of you (maybe you should be banned!?). You have a right to your beliefs or opinions. You want respect for that,RIGHT?? So does every one else. Let them have their say, just as you do. If you don't like something someones says or does, you don't have to stay around, but are 'still' more than free to leave anytime.

ta ta!
