Evacuation urged but no driving allowed, public trans. not running...WTF????

Massachusetts

State of Emergency issued.
NO DRIVING STATEWIDE.
Evacuations urged along Oceanside Drive in Scituate.
Police in Marshfield issue a Code Red Alert for coastal evacuations, according to local media.
Storm totals may exceed 2 feet in some areas with considerable blowing and drifting snow.
As many as 5000 National Guard troops could be responding over the weekend.
All subway, buses and commuter rail services SUSPENDED.

So how do you evacuate if you can't drive or use public transportation?????

2. On foot, of course. It helps to have cross country skis and a good map and compass.

And a bivvy sack and backpacking stove and food for a week and a change of clothes and synthetic long johns and a good parka and wool hat and mittens (with liners) and........

Well, I'm sure people can manage this.

4. Hopefully the National Guard comes and rescues them. I think they'll need a few Bv-206s

5. Lets hope this is just an example of government stupidity in issuing two conflicting orders

Because if it really is going to get so bad that evacuations are necessary but travel conditions are so dangerous that no one can evacuate then I fear a tragedy.

11. Don't be ridiculous.

The local fire department sends out trucks to evacuate people who want to go. They are doing that in Hull, MA right now.

12. Does the Fire Department really have the capability to evacuate entire communities?

When you consider there is a blizzard going on and the fire trucks are going to have to drive at slow speeds I don't see how they could evacuate large numbers of people, they may be able to get a few out but I don't see how they could coordinate a mass evacuation during a blizzard with limited resources. You also have to consider that a Fire Department is likely to have many emergencies to respond to during a major storm like this which is going to make evacuation even more difficult.

Serious question - how do they expect people to evacuate?
