"Recently I've been asked what I want for the holidays. I'm really blessed to have everything I need. All I really want for Christmas is world peace... If you'd like to give us gifts this year I'd appreciate it if you could make a donation to
The HALO Trust, to help remove landmines left over from war, Partners In Health to provide medicine to HIV/AIDS patients in some of the poorest places in the world, Nepal Youth Foundation to free young girls from indentured servitude and reunite them with their families, Tennessee Equality Project to fight against the Don't Say Gay Bill and other anti-equality legislation or Appalachia Service Project, which restores the homes of people who are living in substandard conditions. If you know of other great organizations making a difference, I'd love to hear about them. Feel free to plug away. Non-profits get most of their money from people like you and me. Spend your holiday money at local merchants but don't leave out non-profits. They need us now just as much as they do the rest of the year."

You can see IRS form 990s for 501(c)(*) organizations. These forms detail financial and policy info on charities and foundations. I just looked up the Halo Trust and it looks like they're doing pretty good to me. Interestingly, Cindy McCain is on the board.
