Wash. state residents kill Seattle Police drone program

http://www.examiner.com/article/wash-state-residents-kill-seattle-police-drone-program

After Wednesday night's Public Safety, Civil Rights and Technology Committee hearing in Seattle, where residents raised concern over the Seattle Police Departments attempt to use surveillance drones, the program was successfully killed.

After President Obama signed a bill last February that will allow as many as 30,000 drones to be flown by anyone from police to the Department of Homeland Security within the United States, Seattle became one of 50 organizations in the country to be granted permission from the federal government to start using drones.

“Today I spoke with Seattle Police Chief John Diaz and we agreed that it was time to end the unmanned aerial vehicle program so that SPD can focus its resources on public safety and the community building work that is the department’s priority. The vehicles will be returned to the vendor,” Mayor McGinn wrote.

The city was in the process of developing an ordinance to set up guidelines and regulations for drone use, but Seattle residents weren't having it. During an October public meeting where the department's drone was being showcased, police were overwhelmed by protesters also.

Long in the works before 9/11, which was itself a great excuse to begin to roll out their long term plans.

8. Enjoy the honeymoon

Portland & Seattle lost their only liberal talk radio shows and I bet there will be Republicans elected next round.

This is great news, however, and I am so happy for the region as a whole recently.
Washington's' governor, Inslee, would be a great President or VP.

12. Just because we lost progressive radio doesn't mean we'll start listening to

RW crap and all of the sudden "see the light" and vote Republican.

Don't forget, we legalized gay marriage AND pot.

And we're fighting to get good radio back.

15. I'd love to help get liberal radio back in Portland & Seattle

Is there a website?

I do know of 1 liberal radio listener now listening to a RW financial channel.
And another guy listening to yet another new sport channel.

Anecdotal, but worrisome.
The only 2 people I know in that market and they're not going to NPR even, fwiw.

Norman Goldman is fooling himself if he thinks his audience is going to spend $200 on a device and pay fees to listen to him.
lol

g/l with that

19. Well, that IS disturbing! I can't imagine any true liberal

listening to what they know is RW crap.

Sports I can see, I guess.

I'm actually on a mailing list with updates and calls for volunteers to bring back progressive radio. I just did a search in my mail and can't find one at the moment. Next one I get, I'll PM you the info.

Isn't Norman's thing lik $5/month? I know Randi Rhodes charges, too. I've always been tempted (especially w/Randi because her air time and my listening time rarely gelled), but I'm always broke. What's the $200 device?

28. My friend and I sometimes joke

...about how silly it is to pay a liberal penalty. Like buying a $200 device or paying a fee to listen.
$199 XM XPMP3H1 Portable Satellite Radio and MP3 Player

We'll boycott that. But I have noticed that music has become even more saccharine and soulless.

I signed up at eridani's effort;

16. Yes. I'm so glad to hear this. "focus its resources on public safety and community building work"

yes. They definitely need to work on community building without a doubt. I am in deed proud to be in WA right now. We sure are doing a lot of things right. That's not to say we can let our guard down. There is always work to be done.

20. Uh oh. Last time the Seattle Police Dept was denied fancy technology it wanted

we had a 'public emergency' that needed, coincidence of coincidences, the very same technology that was denied earlier in the day.

24. Article from The Stranger with more info on this

http://slog.thestranger.com/slog/archives/2013/02/07/mayor-will-kill-spds-drone-program

Something I'm noticing in this is that we have a mayor's race building that has quite a few noted liberal Democratic candidates. And here one pushed back at our liberal Mayor from a liberal people's perspective. (Something similar happened in my district, with two prospective state representatives vying to prove liberal credibility in replacing our retiring, very liberal state representative).

The Stranger has run a series of good articles on this topic.

Here's an earlier one that gives more background on the building of opposition and some scary looks at ideas by other police departments in the nation on how they want to use these:
