Iowa bill would jail raped women for ‘murder’ of single-cell zygotes

By: David Edwards

A bill introduced by nine Republican state lawmakers in Iowa on Wednesday would define abortion as “murder,” sending doctors and raped women who terminate pregnancies to jail.

State Rep. Tom Shaw says that he authored House File 138 to protect human life, whether “you’re a zygote, an infant, a teenager or an adult.”

The bill defines a “person” as “an individual human being, without regard to age of development, from the moment of conception, when a zygote is formed, until natural death.”

...

During a Wednesday interview with Denver Bible Church pastor Bob Enyart, Shaw explained that defining a fertilized egg as a “person” in Iowa’s murder statute “just simplifies everything.”

...

According to Democratic state Rep. Beth Wessel-Kroeschell, the new definition of murder would mean that women were jailed if they had an abortion after being raped or to save their own lives.

“We’re talking about the victim of rape would go to prison along with her rapist,” she told the Tribune. “It’s very hard to understand the feeling behind it. It’s a health care issue, I mean, sometimes in order to save someone’s life a woman could possibly need an abortion. When we talk about being pro-life, my new question is ‘whose life?’”

Story here.

Wow, this stuff just keeps snowballing. What is it with Republicans and rape? They believe it is divine intervention if a woman is impregnated by a rapist, how disgusting is that? Sheesh..

1. Isn't that bill a tad unconstitutional?

2. Constitutionality is

irrelevant to Repubs. They know better than the founding fathers, who obviously were a bunch of liberal socialist rabble rousers

9. We still have a constitution? You'd never know it considering neither party seems to support it.

The right hates the 1st, 8th, and 14th amendments.
The left hates the 2nd, and pretends the 4th doesn't exist.

13. Can you blame the left for its ambivalence about the 2nd?? The RW has been shooting at us and

often killing us for decades. We're sick to death of the 2nd being used as a means to terrorize those who dare to stand up to RW fascism.

16. Murder is left to the states to define, and ALEC/Kochs' teaparty rules state legislatures

all over the country.

I don't have a clue how Iowa defines persons or murder, but I'd bet both definitions are new since 2004

3. So, if natural death

is put off indefinitely due to the use of artificial means such as intubation and ventilators, does that mean that you are no longer a human being since a natural process has been circumvented?

14. or if someone dies by UNnatural means...

Like dieing from being forced to carry an ectopic pregnancy....they're NOT a person?

Well that certainly explains the GOPuke view of women.

6. So I'm sure the law covers fertility clinics...

...right? RIGHT??? Hundreds, thousands of fertilized eggs hanging around those places. I doubt all of them survive the process they are put through, even apart from the ones that are intentionally discarded or destroyed.

7. Remarkable...

he wanted to “protect the life of the unborn” because “here’s still some of us that believe life begins at conception.”

To the "some of us": Don't get one. It is really that fucking simple.

8. So Rep. Tom Shaw has it all figured out:it's ultimately up to Tom Shaw. Women's lives don't matter.

He does have that "all knowing" look, doesn't he?

11. This story is not about rape

The story is about outlawing all abortion. Entirely.

15. And what these fuckstick Reps have forgotten...

...is that the Iowa Senate is controlled by Democrats. Good fucking luck, dumbass Iowa GOP House members, getting that bill past Gronstal. It's a bunch of goddamn theatrics that's wasting time that could better be spent putting Iowa back to work and improving the state, all at our expense.
