(35,437 posts)It's not like Gov. Patrick is mad with power and wants the streets cleared and no public transportation for no good reason.

(175,731 posts)But heavy to shovel. At least that's what they're saying about the snow currently falling in northern Illinois that is heading east.
Good luck all.

Junkdrawer
(27,993 posts)but it looks like the big snow will be followed by a week of 40+ temperatures.
Wild weather swings. Just as the climate scientists predicted when the arctic ice melted.

(4,475 posts)It took a month and a half for it all to thaw. I had friends whose cars were buried for more than three weeks before they could get them back out again!
Junkdrawer
(27,993 posts)2 ft snow + thaw = a break for the kids...
2 ft snow + 3 weeks of sub 20s temps = massive pain.
Now, if a warm rain comes after, you could be looking at floods.

(28,581 posts)everything else is relatively manageable.
very high winds and the storm hitting at high tide will probably cause most of the issues.

Keep dry. We're farther inland and sit on a hill. We'll be dryer but will catch the wind.

(12,606 posts)We've stayed there several times in a couple of B&Bs when we had the time.
We actually looked at buying a house/condo there a few years back.
Have you ever been to Salem Wine imports on Church Street?

I love it here. Tt's full of witchy, liberal, treehugging, artsy, historical goodness

(12,606 posts)that has matured up a little. My wife is in archives so she loves Salem for the same historical goodness.

(15,064 posts)I was driving a van. Traveling with a band. We had to be back in Nashville TN the next day or lose major money. As I approached a highway overpass from a side road I noticed the barricades but did not realize 'all' roads were closed. I thought it was just the overpass that was closed until I heard the alert on the radio. Needless to say I went around it and proceeded to drive down the interstate. There was not a vehicle on the road. We did not slide and I took my time. We made it back to Nashville in plenty of time. The extremely bad roads ended in southern Indiana.
Because there was no traffic on the roads there were no other drivers to bump into and people who were frightened at the first snowflake were locked up tight in their cozy homes. It was great. The snow was beautiful. The only people in danger was us and I felt we were all in safe hands. Also there were no police cars patrolling the roads because they thought everyone was staying off of the roads.
I would like to add that I was also young a crazy.

Now to see if they do the same around here, central NY, and if they do hopefully they do it before I leave for the district I am working in on Friday.

People were let out of work far to late. Rt 128 became a parking lot!

My sister just invited me to stay at her place. They have a fire place, plenty of wine ...and a generator. For the fridge anyway. Mom lives upstairs from them. I may go, however I have no idea how I will be able to clear 2 feet of snow from my walkway and stairs! I am on the second floor and the stairs are outside. I usually go out every few hours to keep up with the accumulation! They plow the drive...but no shoveling! Yikes what to do.

(297,147 posts)Such a dilemma.. let us know what you decide to do. Your sister's place sounds cozy!
This is reminding me of all the snow I left in New York.. on Christmas Day 2003 we had the record snowfall in the US. The next day I had to plow through by hand to get in the Co-op's door(I was the first one to work). Do you think I can find anything on google about it.. nooooo.
Guessing everyone is listening to The Gov's warnings now.. especially with Sandy being so fresh in everyone's mind.

An example is my city of Salem: We have to have every parked car off the streets by noon tomorrow. They open up municipal parking areas, train stations, parks, etc as designated emergency parking. It's a pain in the ass, but it does allow the plows to get around.

(83,744 posts)They had to plow around the cars and then tow them before they could clear the roads. Many roads were a parking lot. People died in their cars. It was so very sad. Back in 78 they did not have the intel that we have today. The warnings may not have been great. However the response was.
Everything was closed for a week. Only a few small food stores opened in my area. You were not allowed on the roads for almost a week. I walked to a store after several days...no food left. Amazing. This too will hit hard.
