Introducing Discussionist: A new forum by the creators of DU

I'm pissed. This sucks. I keep my car radio tuned to our local progressive radio

station and lately I'm getting strange voices on it with right wing views. I decided to research what was going on and this is all I could find on one facebook page with little other information:

http://www.facebook.com/FormerKGOListeners/posts/379138492181457

Another PROGRESSIVE Station bites the Talk Radio Dust!!!

~ Mapleton Shifts KYNS, San Luis Obispo from Progressive Talk to All-News. Mapleton’s KYNS, San Luis Obispo has been a progressive talk outlet since the days of Air America but now the signal is airing an all-news format under the brand “SLO Radio News 1340.” The station is using the long-form news blocks from America’s Radio News Network.

This station with bad reception was the only liberal station in my area. Yet, it was where we could get Thom Hartmann, Stephanie Miller, Randi Rhodes and Mike Malloy. Poof! They are gone! I can still get Stephanie on Current TV, Thom on FSTV and Randi and Mike nowhere without paying for it.

No wonder I have to listen to shit at the gym like I did yesterday about rich people creating jobs, and charities and churches should take care of the destitute and blah, blah. Anybody got any ideas about what we can do? Would it be possible to go before the County Board of Supervisors (pretty much morons but all we got) and try to make the case that hearing only one side of a message creates totalitarian states. I can point to Nazi Germany, Soviet Russia, Castro's Cuba, today's China, etc., etc.? Should I try to find out who posted the FB page and ask if there are others on board to doing something?

I'm really unfamiliar with pushing local political deities to do the right thing. Any advice? This is not good for San Luis Obispo, California or democracy.

I posted this in the CA forum and then thought maybe people from other states might have ideas who have faced this.

We already have 2 Hate Radio stations, plus the conservatives on multiple all-news stations.

The public has no control over the "public" airwaves, and hasn't since the early eighties.

like to tune into the radio when they are driving. I also take my battery operated radio outside when I'm gardening. There shouldn't just be Rush Limbaugh, Laura Ingraham, etc., out there all over the place.

Your County, and for that matter your State have no influence on radio programming.

That is the pervue of the Federal Communications Commission.

17. Yup, I get to listen to Herman Cain, Rush and Hannity.

That is the only thing available on talk radio here in the Atlanta area on AM stations. I only listen on my car radio. Otherwise, I tune to the FM music stations, if I am lucky enough to find them. Most stations are Spanish or religious. That is what you get when you live in the bible belt.

11. Web stream another radio station.

Still a number of other choices: http://tunein.com/radio/Progressive-Talk-c57925/

That's how I listen. I live in a craphole that would never stand a chance of getting any sort of progressive radio. I prefer WCPT out of Chicago, although they don't carry Randi. I listen to her on KTLK. If you download TapinRadio, you can record shows and load them onto an MP3 player if you wish to listen at another time. You can stream both those stations with TapinRadio.

http://download.cnet.com/TapinRadio/3000-2168_4-75324204.html

As for pushing the locals, I am of no help here. I live in a right-wing totalitarian hellhole, and trying to push for any sort of change is an act of futility, so I have no useful advice for you, I am afraid.

12. I can only do the MP3 thing if it's free. On a limited income here.

How this started was I recommended Thom Hartmann to a woman at the gym who is misinformed on a number of things and she tuned in and he wasn't there. I had noticed on trips around town running errands that there were strange voices but didn't think a whole lot about it as this station often put strange programming on when some of the regular hosts were on vacation.

The program is free. You can record whatever you want for free. There is a "pro"version available that allows one to schedule what and when you want to record. It's $15.

It's like all the little pockets of sanity that we have are hard to access but still there. However, this loss might lead to a bigger loss like our little liberal TV programs like Democracy Now! FSTV. Current TV is lost.

20. I don't think we have enough rich liberals.

It also helps to know the business. That was the mistake Air America's owners made. They didn't have a clue about the business. You know if some rich liberal did buy one, they should put someone in charge who has worked in the field a long time. I would hand the management part over to Thom Hartmann who has past business experience and is smart enough to figure out solutions when the problems arise.

21. there really does seem to have been a purge in the last 3 months

some people suggest it's a revenge thing for the election, or a proactive step by conservatives to block any and all progressive voices from being broadcast at all.

others always shoot this down with statements about how the Nth sports talk station in a liberal market is still more profitable than the only progressive talk outlet.

I used to give a lot of credence to the latter opinion -- they tend to have the arbitron numbers ready to back them up. However, there's been a lot of very similar actions within a short time frame, enough to make me think that at the very least there's a set of focused marketing strategy memo going out to station owners suggesting that dropping progressive talk formats is absolutely essential to the survival of their businesses.

The only way we'll ever have reliable broadcast progressive talk radio in this country is if the owners are dedicated liberals who don't sell their holdings even when the price is very high.

27. Fox talk radio was losing money for years

Murdoch & co. propped them up while the Fox (O'Reilly, Hannity, et al) radio shows were actually losing money in big markets across the USA.
But for some reason we can't have a single progressive talk station.

It's not the talkers, it's not the audience, it's not even the advertisers. Our problem is the owners. Prog talk stations are often owned by the same people who own all the rest (ClearChannel, e.g.) and they just don't have any interest in keeping liberal opinions on the air, even if the stations are breaking even or making money. If there's the slightest possibility they can make more money by changing formats, it looks like they'll do it in a heartbeat, especially since the election.

"Oh wait, we were broadcasting these subversive opinions? What were we thinking!"

Want liberal talk radio? The only way we'll keep it is if we own the broadcast licenses ourselves, as a devoted collective. No point complaining to the FCC or your town council. Better to go to your community and try to organize a large group of like-minded individuals who will contribute to owning and maintaining a broadcast license and facilities. It can be done (KBOO in Portland, for example). Maybe see if the teamsters or ILWU locals in your area can help out.

Unfortunately, the unions are drying up about as fast as liberal talk radio outlets, but going to them might still be worth a try. You'll definitely have better odds with your local union reps than your town council.

24. Advertising. Best way to get to any of them. They all depend on either ad dollars or syndication.

You have to listen to their sponsors and demand they buy advertising for a progressive station. The station manager at the station may be able to help. If the station manager has changed with the new branding try to find out where the old one went. Another thing may be to try to get a two or three hour block each day with a progressive host.

36. You are unlikely to find such a person

If by "this" you mean someone who has experience with a local government telling a radio station what they can say.

The FCC license is contingent on a figleaf of "community" based programming. What this boils down to is that if a computer generated voice reads the National Weather Service report at 6 AM, they're fine.

Another one popped up like a year ago, but I noticed that is gone now too.

The local talk radio, once rabidly right wing was slowly but surely moving to more moderate and liberal programming was also switched to music at the first of the year.

Are they pulling out all the stops leading up to 2016 so they can make sure we get another right wing fanatic in the White House? Are they polishing things up for Jeb Bush to step in? Or maybe even Jeb is too "liberal" for our new lord and masters who apparently are running everything from behind the scenes.

And put on Glenn beck. The 3 are on at night when I don't listen. We complained and got Randi Rhodes, Norman Goldman from 12pm on. They even took off local talk radio on another station and put on right wing talkers . All owned by clear channel. The ratings are down and they lost local advertisers so it's not about making money but pushing their right wing agenda.

a couple of months ago. We should have seen the handwriting on the wall back then because those complaints were totally ignored. Really, it's like the liberal majority doesn't exist anymore. If a Martian landed here today, he would probably assume that the USA was full of right wing loons if he based his opinion on our mainstream media and entertainment.
