Introducing Discussionist: A new forum by the creators of DU

Dear National Weather Service...

Please don't do that again.
Thank you.

You just disrupted the entire office while we were discussing the snowstorm that is heading our way.
Your shrieking text message was totally unnecessary.
As have been all the others you have sent me and everybody else.
Every single time you do that, everybody is already fully aware of what's coming.
Stop it.

When you do things like that, you only give the privatizers more ammo for privatizing what you do.
Look at the post office.
They actually do a pretty damn good job, but each time some sort of incompetence on their part comes up, the privatizers use it as propaganda against them.
Please don't let them do that to you.

And shrieking text messages with completely redundant information will serve that purpose.
Please stop it.
Thank you...

Signed,
A Fan

1. Who do you think provides the information on the snowstorm you were discussing?

Talk about ingratitude.

4. I love the National Weather Service.

I go to their page every single day.
I don't 100 decibel shrieking text messages to tell me what I already know.

3. The NWS is great at what they do...

They never hype weather events for profit like the private sector does.

5. I would rather have fair warning

sent by people that know what they are talking about.

Stay safe, drive carefully.

6. A text message would be fine...

The 100 decibel shriek was unnecessary, and freaked out everyone in the building.

8. The skrieking text message was from your phone, the phone company, or one of your apps.

While it contained NWS info, it was not sent to your phone by NOAA or the NWS. Check your phone settings and read the fine print on your apps beofre blaming the gubermint!

9. Fine print?

There was no app for this, it just happens.
Lots of people on Facebook, who use lots of different phones through different service providers are all complaining about this right now.

The National Weather Service could make this stop if they want to.
The text is fine, the shriek from hell is unnecessary.

10. You or your phone has an app that is loudly playing emergency messages.

It is not the NWS. Figure out what is doing it and turn it off if it bothers you.

Google turn off weather messages on "your device type".

11. I have a weather radio to warn me of sudden weather events -

it goes off every Wednesday at 11 for a test. The small auxiliary dog howls during the entire recorded message, although he ignores the buzzing alert signal preceding it.
