10. Actually he said assault RIFLE...

...as in M-16s, AK-47s, and other fully automatic military weapons. Rest assured, people are NOT lining up to buy such weapons...which are still extremely tightly regulated, as they have been since 1934.
People have been buying assault WEAPONS, which is a vague term meaning pretty much whatever the user wants. Such weapons may look like a military assault rifle, but are not since they are not capable of automatic fire. In some cases where "assault weapon" is defined legally (as in Conn.), what might be considered an assault weapon in fact isn't, since it lacks cosmetic features outlined in the legal definition.

16. Wow - really? You mean this actor got the PC terminology wrong??

Surely THAT would piss off the NRA dupes.

Although, Gun Digest included "the latest in full auto & semiauto centerfires, rimfires, and shotguns" in their Gun Digest Book of "Assault Weapons".

Hmph...maybe THEY got it backwards instead of Jim?

19. Terminology IS important.

You wouldn't use "venereal disease" when describing a toe nail infection, for example.

I have no idea what Gun Digest Book says. Assuming your quote is correct, then they are essentially correct, AFAIK. "Assault weapon" has no exact meaning. It means whatever the user wants it to mean. Since shotguns were used in trench warfare in WWI, I suppose they could be considered an assault weapon. An automatic assault rifle is definitely an assault weapon, but an assault weapon isn't necessarily an assault rifle, since it could also be describing a shotgun or a semi-automatic hunting rifle styled as a military weapon.

Nearest analogy I might make is "rock music". A vague term meaning whatever the user wants. "Metal rock" is a type of rock, with a narrower definition. Metal rock is rock music, but rock music isn't neccessarily metal rock, since it could also be prog-rock, rockabilly, or any one of numerous and vastly different sub-genres.

This is why correct terminology is important, and shouldn't be flippingly dismissed with a "that's just an NRA talking point" comment.

28. SO who gets to corner the market on terminology?

Meriam Webster?

http://www.merriam-webster.com/dictionary/assault%20rifle

assault rifle noun
Definition of ASSAULT RIFLE
: any of various automatic or semiautomatic rifles with large capacity magazines designed for military use

Britannica?

http://www.britannica.com/EBchecked/topic/39165/assault-rifle

assault rifle, military firearm that is chambered for ammunition of reduced size or propellant charge and that has the capacity to switch between semiautomatic and fully automatic fire. Because they are light and portable yet still able to deliver a high volume of fire with reasonable accuracy...
...
In those countries where assault rifles can be purchased in the civilian market, their sale is subject to various restrictions, such as the elimination of automatic action and of the capacity to fire high-performance military ammunition.

Guns & Ammo?

"1982: Guns & Ammo magazine publishes a guide to semi-automatic assault weapons simply titled, Assault Rifles."

H&K?

"1984: A Heckler & Koch advertisement for the "HK 91 Semi-Automatic Assault Rifle"

Not busting balls, but really - who says which use of the terminology is correct?

56. Semantics is important

Yet most folks just throw around terms not knowing what they are saying.

When looking at "military" style rifles, the cartridge size is what roughly classifies the weapon that fires that cartridge.

Assault rifles are a lighter carbine, accurate(usable) at 100 - 120 yards at best. These little rounds generally fail to penetrate modern battle armor. Before modern technology, they were meant to wound enemy soldiers rather than kill. It takes more enemy resources to tend to wounded fighters than to abandon their dead.
A battle rifle OTOH is a larger round that is accurate at 300-450 yards that will penetrate body armor.

Assault weapons are popguns compared to the real deal FN/FAL but Hollywood cinema lessons on ballistics lead to "knowledge" that is fallacious.

Now to the knee jerk anti-gun crowd, these minutia are meaningless and only see death when discussing such matters, thus tossing off Assault rifle this assault weapons that in an effort to feel safer.

AKA "Just another anti-gunner talking point".

Fantasies of fighting off some "tyrannical" Federal government with comparative pea shooters may work for starving Afghans, but would never last here in the land of the video game brave.

The US is 88 per 100 people, but Canada still ranks very high on the list.

They don't break it down by type of gun owned. I would guess that hunting is very popular in Canada.

48. Hunting is popular

although our lovely conservative government just did away with the long gun registry and I think we'll see some kind of consequence of that...but handguns and other semi-auto type guns are heavily regulated. You have to take a firearms safety course to get your license and then you have to register your gun. I'm guessing most guns ARE hunting rifles - not the semi-auto/convertible kind either. Canada has a lot of desolate areas and wildlife and a lot of the guns are people in rural areas. My grandfather had 5 or 6 as he hunted and they had bears always wandering into their yard...My other grandfather had a few too, taught me to shoot them. But these are OLD guns, 2-3 shots at a time, at the most. I think there are a LOT of those in Canada. FAR fewer things like handguns. Plus we have strict storage and transport laws. You cannot conceal carry either. We have laws against large capacity mags too.

Also, it's been estimated that half of all gun crimes in Canada are committed with guns smuggled in from the US. Also our overall popular culture is very similar so it's no surprise there are a lot of guns in Canada. The difference is, people here don't carry around guns, talk about it much or see it as a legit 'hobby' in most places (odd pockets here or there in my right wing province) and most people, a VAST marjority are very pro-gun control. Plus we don't see owning a gun as a 'right' any more than we see owning a car as a right. It's not in our constitution. It's a totally different mindset.

That is exactly what I think. It is ghoulish that gun and ammo sales should increase after a slaughter. The arms cartels making money off tragic events, are depraved. The NRA, is despicable, because it promotes and justifies, the ownership and use of instruments of death. Unreal.

An advocate for good. He's so right with this statement. I saw fools posting on Facebook about "their" rights and all I could think is "what about those little lives lost?" Where is the empathy. The human ability to relate to someone else's suffering. It wasn't there because these people exhibit sociopathic tendencies. The fact they think about only themselves and their "right" to own guns speak volumes in light of what happened. We are a sick nation.
